On busy streets, parking lots, and highways, vehicle wraps present a mobile marketing canvas. However, the opportunity expands to non-traditional vehicles such as snowmobiles, ATVs, dirt bikes, boats, and garbage trucks. Media offerings featuring high-tack adhesives are designed to bond with challenging substrates such as powder-coated paints, low surface energy plastics, and fiberglass.

“Vinyl and film products used for specialized vehicles are often highly durable, can wrap around compound curves, and/or can adhere to low surface energy plastics,” explains Tim Boxeth, market manager, 3M Commercial Solutions.

Additionally, easy apply air egress features and aggressive overlaminates are available to provide ease of installation and protection for extreme environments.

The opportunity for wrapping untraditional vehicles is abundant, and media manufacturers are making it possible for print service providers (PSPs) to offer this service by introducing new products. With the correct installation techniques and media selections, PSPs are presented with a new revenue stream.

Wrap Potential
Vehicle and fleet wraps have and continue to make their mark. However, as the appeal and knowledge of vehicle wraps penetrates the mainstream, industrial and recreational applications don’t have to miss out.

Non-traditional and specialty vehicles include ATVs, boats, dirt bikes, kayaks, bull dozers, and heavy-duty maintenance trucks. All provide potential revenue opportunities to PSPs well equipped to successfully wrap these vehicles.

Craig Campbell, market manager – graphic products, Orafol Americas, suggests introducing this service to a print providers current customer base. “For example, if the provider is already producing vehicle wraps for a construction company, then what vehicles are not being wrapped? Any vehicle that is going to be seen by consumers is a potential for increasing brand awareness.”

Nicole Shokralla, product manager, Arlon Graphics, LLC, sees potential in any form of transportation that requires high abrasion resistance.

The sporting world has embraced these applications for years, and there is a trickledown effect to other non-traditional vehicles. “Heavy equipment manufacturers tend to keep their logos and graphics minimal, but that doesn’t mean the rental and construction companies that buy the equipment shouldn’t utilize the machine for their own advertising. The graphics and logos on service vehicles, like garbage trucks, seem to keep getting bigger and the same is true for dumpsters and the like,” explains Jason Yard, marketing manager, Mactac Distributor Products.

Boxeth says right now, the motorsports after market is one of the biggest areas to feature specialized vehicle wraps. “Whether it is an amateur or professional rider, dirt bikes, ATVs, and snowmobiles are steadily becoming popular subjects for graphics or wraps,” he shares.

High-tack films for non-traditional vehicles are also used to create graphics and marketing messages on construction barriers because they can adhere to more unique surfaces like plywood, adds Joey Heiob, technical sales representative, Avery Dennison Graphics Solutions.

Media Requirements
To wrap non-traditional vehicles, which often feature hard to stick to surfaces, vinyl and film solutions with high-tack adhesion are in demand.

“A high-bond product is instrumental in adhering to these unique surfaces,” says Blake McCleary, marketing manager, General Formulations. He explains that low energy surfaces are problematic and hard to stick to with standard adhesive-backed vinyl products.

Shokralla agrees that the most critical media feature for these specialty wraps is the adhesive system. “The adhesive determines whether or not the film will bond to your substrate and stay down. For these types of applications, you primarily need a film compatible with low surface energy plastics.”

McCleary suggests that wrapping specialty vehicles and surfaces requires a durable product with a soft adhesive to wet out and spread over the substrate surface. He says low surface energy products can be used on flat to slightly curved surfaces and will create a long lasting bond.

“Today’s adhesive technologies make installing newer films to low energy substrates much easier,” admits Heiob.

While it depends on the application, Yard also believes that adhesive is the most important consideration for wrapping complex and exotic vehicles. “When you consider the low surface energy of fiberglass, on for example a dirt bike, or the environmental conditions of a service vehicle, like a garbage truck, you need to be certain that you are selecting a product with the right adhesive for a non-traditional wrap,” says Yard. He stresses that the adhesive needs to hold up and choosing the correct option for a specific vehicle is important.

“When we recommend pressure-sensitive adhesive products for more industrial-type applications, we really want to understand the type of vehicle the product will be applied to as well as what that vehicle will be exposed to on a regular basis,” agrees Campbell.

In looking at industrial equipment and recreation vehicles, he says it is important to know graphics produced for these applications will likely have to accomplish two tasks, the first being able to adhere to low energy surfaces and the other enduring a lot of abuse over the course of their use.

“In order to meet both of these requirements, the product may need to have a high-tack adhesive, be conformable, and be accompanied with a really durable matching laminate,” continues Campbell.

In terms of how these products differ from media selections used on more traditional vehicles is a matter of reviewing the vehicle’s surface or finish before selecting a substrate.

“In many cases, typical wrapping films may be the product of choice,” shares Campbell. “However, if there is a case of where the graphics will come in contact with heavier cleaning chemicals or petroleum-based products, the type of laminate may need to change in order to withstand the increased exposure to uncommon, non-environmental influences.”

Yard says traditional wrapping films may work in some instances, but it really comes down to knowing the surface that you’re adhering to and finding a product that provides the best solution.

Special Features
Aside from the right adhesive, other features—such as conformability—apply to wraps on untraditional vehicles which are odd or irregular in shape.

“Features really do differ for each application. A boat, for example, would require a durable and conformable vinyl. An ATV or dirt bike would probably require a high-tack adhesive to overcome the hard-to-stick surface of the plastic. Commercial equipment would probably require both characteristics, conformability for complex curves and high tack to overcome powder-coated paints or dirty components. There really is a product out there for everything, the most important aspect is knowing what characteristics you need and how to apply them,” explains Yard.

Campbell also believes that identifying the right media for non-traditional vehicles is critical to the application’s success. “Many times, if it is an industrial piece of equipment, it may be relatively flat. However, if we consider an ATV, then the material must be conformable and the adhesive aggressive enough to stick to low energy plastics,” he offers.

Since a vehicle has both complex curves and flat panels, it is important to use a conformable film, agrees Shokralla. “The film also needs to be durable to protect from dirt and abrasion along with withstanding UV exposure.” Ease of install is important as well, she adds.

In regards to lifespan, Campbell says PSPs must be clear that mechanical damage is not part of their guarantee or warranty. “The reality is that most of these types of graphics are damaged well before the end of their service life,” he warns.

Overlaminate Requirements
In addition to the right base material and proper adhesive, overlaminates are typically recommended when wrapping non-traditional vehicles.

Boxeth says overlaminates are still necessary. “That is, unless one doesn’t care about how the graphic looks after the first ride or race,” he states.

Shokralla recommends overlaminates for several reasons. “First, the overlaminate protects the ink and the graphic since most overlaminates have UV inhibitors that can protect from everyday UV exposures from the sun. Second, the overlaminate helps in terms of ease of install and removability because it gives the film that extra body in order to help installers get a better grip. In addition, an overlaminate can provide abrasion resistance depending on the type,” she says. For example, 12 mil is more abrasion resistant than 1.5 to 2 mil.

Most specialty vehicle wrap applications require a matching laminate for protection purposes. “Generally, the overlaminate is thick and will protect the printed film from abrasion and the elements. Off road vehicles, work equipment, and fiberglass objects will all be exposed to a greater amount of abuse than typical substrates,” offers McCleary.

Yard agrees, noting that overlaminates provide protection and a polished look upon application. “A laminate, especially for an outdoor application like these wraps, is critical to long-term success,” he advises.

“In cases where the PSP knows the graphics will encounter more chemicals, a urethane-based laminate should be considered as it will be able to withstand prolonged exposure better than traditional laminates,” suggests Campbell.

Before You Go
So what should PSPs know before offering specialty vehicle wraps? “The short answer is… everything,” says Campbell. “There are so many variables to consider when approaching these types of wraps. In an effort to narrow it down a bit, the PSP should make sure they have the whole scope of what the wrap is intended to accomplish, including how long it is expected to last. In regards to the vehicle itself, the main questions would need to be centered around the type of coating or material the vehicle is constructed of, what elements—including potential mechanical damage—it will be exposed to on a regular basis, and how the vehicle will be cared for,” he continues.

It is also critical to know the limitations and intentions of the products you choose. “Not all wrap products are created equal or with the same application in mind. It’s also important to know the customer’s expectations,” says Yard. “Think about the wear and tear that a commercial vehicle like a garbage truck or snow removal truck takes on during its life. You need to consider the durability of your products for the intended application.”

“Make sure you know the type of surface you’ll be installing upon, as it can influence the type of product you use and longevity of the installation,” cautions Boxeth. “If you have the opportunity, try it out a bit first.”

Shokralla says a PSP should understand the customer’s expectation of the product life and the surface that the graphic will stick to in order to ensure that the ink is compatible with the media.

Exploring New Wraps
The latest high-tack media products enable PSPs to expand vehicle wrap services to the non-traditional space. Adhesion, conformability, and durability properties offer the recipe for success. In addition to choosing the correct media, it is recommended to approach install differently than traditional wraps, manage client expectations, and most importantly, think outside of the box.

Physically, printheads are a small part of an overall print device. However, they are a critical component. Printhead technology improvements expand digital print into new markets and as a result increase business opportunity. Achievements in grayscale capability, durability, and ink recirculation make it possible for print service providers (PSPs) to reach segments previously served by analog technology.

Flexibility Yields Productivity
Printhead changes advance wide format technologies effecting print quality and meeting PSPs’ demands for higher resolutions at faster speeds. Flexibility is enhanced as newer printheads work with multiple ink sets and feature diverse drop sizes. The result is increased productivity across the board from the production shop to the sales floor.

“By addressing a multitude of market demands such as high speed and high resolution printing, equipment downsizing, cost reduction, and reduced environmental impact, printhead technologies expand the possibilities of digital printing including wide format,” admits Sumio Arima, senior manager, IPD sales department, corporate printing device group, Kyocera Corporation.

According to Becky McConnell, product marketing manager, Fujifilm North America Corporation, Graphic Systems Division, printhead technology advances allow print quality to increase while simultaneously giving print providers more flexibility in their output.

This is in response to industry demand for faster, better, and cheaper, says Tim Rosario, senior program manager, Fujifilm Dimatix, Inc. “As a result, printheads are introduced that are compatible with many new ink sets, higher native resolutions, and faster print speeds that are easier to integrate,” he continues. Fujifilm offers two-color printheads that allow system designers to pack four colors into a very small carriage while also maintaining productivity and quality, adds Rosario.

Flexibility is associated with drop sizes, which Akihisa Maruyama, inkjet business unit, Konica Minolta, Inc., suggests is important and effective for matching customers’ quality needs. “Our proprietary ink injection control technology has reached a new level that allows flexible ink adjustments for diverse drop sizes,” he explains.

Esteban Marin, director – Printek division, Seiko Instruments USA, Inc., believes that current printhead developments focus on providing three major technological breakthroughs and that all major original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) adopt printhead technologies that provide one or all. These are water-based compatibility such as latex-type developments, nozzle redundancy to yield print quality reliability, and reliability in general to reduce ink waste.

The stability of today’s printheads increase productivity. “Printhead technology advancements also allow for some printheads to be more durable. This makes for easier press maintenance, which makes operators more productive. Also, with easier maintenance comes increased uptime,” explains McConnell.

Go with the Flow
PSPs expect high image quality and productivity at low running costs from their printers. Today’s printheads help them achieve this with recirculation features that control ink flow.

According to Marin, most printhead suppliers during 2014 to 2015 focused on launching higher resolution printheads with recirculation. He cites these as two key features that result in increased printing periods and decreased probability of failed nozzles when combined.

“The addition of non-wetting coatings and ink recirculation reduces ink consumption for printer start up and reduces the need for maintenance during the day, increasing printer productivity and reducing ink waste. This also enables a variety of new and difficult inks to work in an inkjet environment,” says Rosario.

Kyocera’s printheads deliver high-quality, high-speed printing through ultra-high precision ink discharge, which is made possible by the company’s proprietary technologies in fluid channel structure design and piezo-actuator drive control. “Using the piezoelectric effect to control ink flow, the actuator is a critical component to enabling the printhead to offer high-speed, high-resolution printing,” explains Arima.

Printhead Life
New printheads come to market and actively increase productivity in print shops. Manufacturers make a point to integrate feature sets that prolong the life of this integral part of the printer. Common components include nozzle plates, side guards, and filters.

For example, Kyocera’s latest printhead for textile printing features a rigid metal nozzle plate, side guards with enhanced shock resistance, and a protected structure to prevent invasion of ink mist. “We believe that the durability achieved by these features contributes to enhanced longevity,” explains Arima.

According to the company, ink mist generated during the printing process is prevented from entering the printhead thanks to sealant applied around the connection parts utilized for making interface connections. The side guards and rigid metal nozzle plate underwent drop and shock tests five to ten times stronger compared to impact caused when fabric strikes the printhead and nozzle plate during typical textile printing, backing up the intent of the manufacturer to offer a durable design.

“Printhead life is generally affected by dirt, damage during printing, ink getting into the wrong places, or electrical issues caused from an external source,” says Rosario. Fujifilm printheads feature either metal or silicon nozzle plates making them durable and less susceptible to damage during printing. They also include an internal filter to help extend printhead life by collecting dirt. In addition, the printheads are either sealed with a conformal coating or have a cover to prevent damage from ink spills.

It isn’t just the printhead and its components that help prolong its life. “This is a combined effort not only from the printhead suppliers but also the ink companies. With less aggressive and better formulations, less maintenance is required. Maintenance is one of the processes where most user mistakes happen,” cautions Marin.

The printhead, ink, and the printer all work together. “Press features allow for increased printhead life like UV sensors and automated printhead maintenance, as well as monitoring that helps the operator know how to maintain the printheads to avoid quality degradation,” adds McConnell.

Newest Technology
The newest printhead technology features components that enhance productivity in printers.

Epson’s PrecisionCore technology is highly scalable, for use in products ranging from desktop printers to industrial systems. The modularity allows PrecisionCore print chips to be arrayed in both moving serial printhead and fixed linehead configurations. According to the company, PrecisionCore printhead nozzles can deliver drops as small as 1.5 picoliters or as large as drops of up to 32.5 picoliters.

Fujifilm builds on the strengths of its Galaxy and Nova printhead lines with new products that include non-wetting coatings and ink recirculation. It recently introduced a micro electro mechanical (MEMS) 1,200 dpi printhead for true industrial applications. Its Samba product is the basis for sheet-fed inkjet printers used in the commercial print space and is now being integrated into other commercial print applications like textiles, packaging, and label presses.

Hewlett-Packard (HP) announced the HP PageWide XL family in 2015, utilizing the HP 841 PageWide XL Printhead. This printhead prints four colors of ink with 6,336 nozzles per color at 1,200 nozzles per inch for a total of 25,344 nozzles on each printhead. Eight of these printheads are used to deliver a 40-inch print swath on HP PageWide XL large format graphics printers. HP PageWide Printheads are built using HP Scalable Printing Technology that employs common design and manufacturing processing based on integrated circuit technologies, enabling HP PageWide Printheads to power HP solutions ranging from business printing to large format and commercial printing.

Konica Minolta’s newest printhead technology was highlighted in July 2015 with plans to begin mass production in Spring 2016. Three industrial inkjet printheads—ME130H, MC160H, and ML160H—adopt Konica Minolta’s independently developed MEMS technologies, which enable 1,024 nozzles to be arrayed three dimensionally in high density. The new printheads feature improved resistance with inks, ranging from aqueous to UV and solvent, and are compatible with every industrial ink.

Kyocera launched the KJ4B-0300-G06DS printhead for textile printing in November 2015. Compatible with water-based inks, the design enhanced the printheads for use under the harsh conditions of textile printing. It offers simultaneous two-color printing with one printhead and features an effective print width of approximately four inches. The printhead can withstand temperatures between -20 to 80 degrees Celsius and operates even when dipped in high-temperature reactive ink.

Ricoh Americas Corporation uses its Ricoh Gen5 printheads in the Ricoh Pro L4130/L4160 wide format printers. Each of two piezo printheads are configured with 1,280 nozzles per head to ensure high print speeds at high quality—a precise drop is dispensed at the exact location every time, according to the company. With multi-jetting capabilities, three drops of various sizes are simultaneously applied to accommodate varying media in addition to density requirements.

Seiko’s latest printhead development is the RC1536. It is an industrial printhead developed for single-pass applications. Its unique nozzle level recirculation feature allows OEMs to utilize highly pigmented inks. The self recovery feature enables long-term sustainability by allowing drop-out nozzles caused by air bubbles or dust to recover automatically. The RC1536 has 1,536 active nozzles with a drop volume of 13 to 100 picoliters dependent on the ink and ink supply system in use.

Xaar announced the Xaar 501 series of printheads in 2014. With TF Technology in new Pulsed mode, printers can output high viscosity or heavily pigmented inks like white—the mode allows ink to be recirculated directly past the back of the nozzle only when the printhead is not jetting. PrecisionPlus architecture optimizes the actuator performance giving more uniform drop formation across the print swath. The Xaar 501 is designed to be compatible with a range of oil and UV-curable inks.

Integral Parts
Printheads expand the possibilities of wide format with features that enhance quality and flexibility. Between elements like plates and side guards and ink recirculation systems, PSPs are given the opportunity to increase productivity in their shops.

Roll printers between 54 to 60 inches in width are popular among print service providers (PSPs) due to ease of use and low cost of entry. These devices offer quality, reliability, and versatility. A number of models are available for eco-solvent, latex, solvent, sublimation, and UV printing. Each provide features ideal for creating different applications. Manufacturers continue to enhance equipment to cater to PSPs operating at a variety of duty cycles.

Type of PSP
Companies handling all volumes of work adopt and utilize roll-to-roll printers. Choosing the correct width depends on the PSP, type of media, and applications created. The candidates for printers in the 54- to 60-inch range are both entry-level and more experienced PSPs. In both scenarios, the print width delivers on reliability and versatility.

“The typical buyer of this size roll to roll is the owner of a mid-size sign shop with a good amount of workflow that doesn’t necessarily require a heavy-volume, high-production printer, but still wants a reliable, durable performance that will help the business succeed and grow,” explains Eric Zimmerman, product manager, color products, Roland DGA Corporation.

In general, every PSP wants to take advantage of capabilities and upgrade its company’s service offerings. According to Ken VanHorn, director, marketing and business development, Mimaki USA, Inc., smaller shops, franchise storefronts, and in-house operations are all candidates for 54-inch printers because of the all-around versatility and compact footprint offered.

Michelle Johnson, advertising and events manager, Mutoh America, Inc., believes 54-inch wide printers are generally adopted by PSPs either entering the printing industry, expanding their shop’s printing production capabilities, or looking to cater to their allotted work space without disrupting the flow.

54- to 60-inch printers are more than just entry level. “This size printer is ideal for commercial printers looking to add wide format capabilities to their portfolios. Choosing a roll-to-roll printer of this size would allow any company to expand the types of client jobs they can service,” says John Fulena, VP, production printing business group, Ricoh America Corp.

Reasons of Range
PSPs choose printers in this range because they expand capabilities, while simultaneously increasing production efficiencies and revenue. Media type and ease of usage also drive print providers to choose a roll-to-roll printer between 54 to 60 inches.

Price and footprint are two common considerations that effect a decision. “Some PSPs entering the industry may find a 54-inch printer attractive because they are more readily available at a low cost of entry and provide a smaller footprint,” admits Kelly Gornick, marketing communications manager, wide format division, OKI Data Americas.

Oriol Gash, director, large format printing, Hewlett-Packard (HP), also believes this specific range allows smaller print shops to expand printing versatility. Another point of interest is that it also meets the criteria of a smaller print shop’s work area and environment.

Media size is a consideration, whether a print provider realizes it or not. Rolls in this range are easy to manage and install and come in a variety of options. “54- to 60-inch is a popular size because there is a variety of media available to suit a number of application types,” explains VanHorn.

A PSP may choose this size roll-to-roll printer simply because it prints enough flexible material to warrant a designated press specifically for those targeted and popular applications, according to Becky McConnell, associate product marketing manager, graphic systems division, Fujifilm North America Corporation.

Duty Cycle
The decision whether to purchase one printer over another is also based on duty cycle. A device may be required to run as a 24/7 workhorse or only in operation a few times a week. In the 54- to 60-inch range, duty cycle needs vary.

For example, Johnson points out that not only does it differ from shop to shop, but also on a daily basis for one business. “It can go in waves. Speed and quality go hand in hand. You want a machine that can produce high-quality prints at quick speeds to eliminate the time you spend on one job,” she continues.

Johnson explains that Mutoh printers are made to run all-day, every day and specific features allow operators to get away from the printer and monitor settings from their smartphones—eliminating the need to ‘babysit’ printers.

It is dependent on the environment, according to Gornick. For a business operating at mid- to high-production levels, OKI ColorPainter printers are ideal because they are made to be workhorses, she admits.

“We have many customers running two and three shifts every day—and the key to this is being diligent with the proper maintenance schedule. OKI Data ColorPainter printers want to run, and run often,” shares Gornick.

Specific Widths
Here we include information on printers available in the 54- to 60-inch range grouped by ink type.

Latex
HP produces two 54-inch roll printers, the HP Latex 110 Printer and HP Latex 310 Printer, which are compatible with latex ink. They feature application capabilities such as banners, self-adhesive vinyl, films, papers, wallcoverings, canvas, synthetics, and fabrics. Both printers output at speeds of 517 square feet per hour (sf/h) in billboard mode, two pass or 54 sf/h in high saturation textile mode.

The Ricoh Pro L4130 is a 54-inch roll to roll that utilizes latex ink and outputs at speeds of up to 184 sf/h. Billboards, banners, outdoor and indoor signage, retail point of sale and point of purchase (POP), exhibition and event graphics, vehicle wraps, and wallcoverings are examples of applications this printer creates. A few features that set this printer apart from the competition include going beyond CMYK with vibrant white and clear ink for a wide color gamut and bold output on clear substrates. This also includes using Ricoh’s latex inks, which are highly durable and can be used on plastic, vinyl, textile, clear film, and backlit material.

Pigment
Canon U.S.A., Inc. presents the imagePROGRAF iPF9400, a 60-inch roll printer that utilizes a 12-color Lucia EX pigment-based ink set. Compatible media includes coated papers, photographic and glossy paper, banner, and fine art. Canon intended for this machine to be built for artists and photographers that need advanced printing technologies to fulfill a new level of creativity. The imagePROGRAF iPF9400 is equipped with a multi-sensor that ensures improved color density detection and allows for precise calibration and color matching. The company also offers the imagePROGRAF iPF9400S, which is equipped with an eight-color Lucia EX ink set.

HP also makes two 60-inch wide roll printers, the HP DesignJet Z6800 Photo Production Printer and HP DesignJet Z6600 Production Printer. These printers are compatible with pigment-based ink and work with media types such as bond and coated paper, technical paper, film, photographic paper, proofing paper, backlit, self adhesive, banner and sign, as well as fine art printing material. Each prints at speeds of up to 1,500 sf/h. The HP DesignJet Z6800 differentiates itself from the competition with the ability to generate custom ICC profiles for color accuracy and consistency, while the HP DesignJet Z6600 guards against possible media-feed or drop-placement errors.

Solvents
Mimaki has two roll-to-roll 54-inch printers, the Mimaki CJV300-130 and CJV150-130, which can be configured for dye-sublimation or eco-solvent. While running eco-solvent ink, a printing speed of 991 sf/h is achieved by the Mimaki CJV300-130 and 520 sf/h with the Mimaki CJV150-130. These printers differentiate from the competition with new printheads that have waveform technology for precise dot placement and white ink for printing on transparent media or non-white media—metallic or colored vinyl. Orange inks are available, as well as a new silver ink that is brighter than the previous formula and can be used to create 648 metallic colors. There is also an integrated contour cut capability for easy handling and finishing.

Mutoh’s ValueJet 1324X is a 54-inch eco-solvent roll-to-roll printer. It creates applications such as banners, decals, outdoor and indoor signage, stickers, and vehicle wraps. With printing speeds of up to 565 sf/h, this printer differentiates itself from the competition with Mutoh Smart Printing Technology, which offers features such as checking the printer’s status, process control, and color management from a smartphone; eliminating banding; and creating a custom ecommerce website.

OKI Data’s ColorPainter W-54s prints at 191 sf/h in high-speed print mode. The 54-inch device uses low-solvent GX ink or IX ink—equipped with no hazardous air pollutants. Unique to this printer line is the option to utilize fluorescent inks, which can be printed not only as a spot color but as part of traditional CMYK process color as well.

Workflow software is increasingly offered in the cloud as a user-friendly method for print service providers (PSPs) to create an efficient, streamlined workplace. While the cloud is beneficial for a number of reasons—availability, cost savings, ease of maintenance, and management—specific features make it ideal for wide format print shops.

Customer-facing tools such as file uploading, job layout, and proofing are attractive options for PSPs considering expanding their client base while integrating online ordering options. On the backend, job management functions like tracking a project from beginning to end, estimating, and collaborating between peers are important to consider.

While an end-to-end workflow isn’t necessarily any easier to implement when created on the cloud, it does have its own merits, specifically for those PSPs scattered in separate geographical areas. Today’s solutions make it easier to connect between different vendors thanks to open APIs and data exchange.

Software vendors and suppliers promote the cloud in their own individual ways while addressing other trending factors in workflow from open communication to automation. The cloud is simply another hosting platform and workflow software benefits from the collaboration capabilities it offers.

General Benefits
Workflow benefits from the cloud. Convenience, availability, cost, and maintenance are attractive features. “Cloud-based workflow is made for the way people work today, and increasingly the way business is conducted today,” admits Steve Ciesemier, direct sales manager, Aleyant Systems, LLC.

In a world that may feel like it is shrinking, there is still a need for travel. The cloud enables brand owners, printer operators, and executives to review important jobs as if they were on location in the shop. “This level of connectivity allows business owners and operators to have constant, on demand access to their business operations and processes,” explains JP Hunt, partner, InkSoft.

The cloud presents different expenses. Upfront costs like an initial capital investment are decreased and even in certain instances eliminated. The investment in getting the solution up and running and then maintaining that system is often nominal.

According to Ellen Faith Hurwitch, VP – director of operations, the Americas, RedTie, Inc., “cloud storage is a fraction of the cost of maintaining onsite storage and requires far less local technical expertise. In addition, backup/recovery protocols are less costly and easier to maintain.”

“You eliminate the budget requirement, operational costs, and the resources to deploy, manage, and maintain the system,” agrees Graham Blanks, director, business operations North America, Dalim Software GmbH.

Maintenance is not only less expensive, but the cloud generally offers fewer opportunities for system failure. Security is enhanced with Web-based applications. “Most viruses and malware attack and exploit physical hardware like local servers and computers. Cloud applications have additional layers of protection such as firewalls, automated backups, and redundancy,” says Hunt.

“One of the benefits of managing your software in the cloud is less chance of an outage. A team of people work behind the scenes to ensure that the system continues to run smoothly and without any interruptions. This also means that the response time is much faster when you need to get in touch with the IT team,” agrees Usman Ali, principal, Ordant.

Another important aspect of maintenance is keeping up to date with product licensing. “PSPs struggle with hardware license dongles that get damaged, stolen, or become outdated, which can be costly to replace. With cloud-based licensing PSPs eliminate these risks and costs and can more easily scale their production workflow and receive software upgrades,” explains Dean Derhak, product director, SA International (SAi).

Kevin Kennington, business development, ShopVox, suggests that, “the cloud is an immediate way to get answers, respond to customers, and see the big picture. That is the real value. The other aspects such as IT and hardware costs are certainly warranted and matter more on large scale operations than they do for the typical graphic company.”

The Wide Aspect
Specific features of a cloud-based workflow appeal to wide format. Of note are customer facing tools like digital storefronts that offer online ordering, file upload, and proofing. Cloud-based solutions can be specifically customized to handle the unique needs of a large format print order, for both the customer and PSP.

“Aspects of workflow that are quickly migrating to the cloud are those that involve customer interactions, such as proofing and online ordering. Print buyers are increasingly comfortable with using email and other Web technologies in their businesses and expect this kind of interaction with PSPs,” shares Bryan Manwaring, director of product marketing, Onyx Graphics, Inc.

Kristen Simmons, marketing director, Cyrious Software, agrees. “Cloud connectivity is extending the capabilities of end-to-end workflow solutions to include customer facing tools for online artwork design, online ordering, and job approval. Each of these improves the level of service that PSPs can provide their customers.”

For example, file upload with preflight can alert the customer to potential problems before the job is delivered to the printer, says Mark Gallucci, manager, technology marketing, commercial software, North America, Agfa Graphics. This eliminates unnecessary rework for both the client and print operator.

Stephen McWilliam, EVP, Avanti Systems, suggests that since large format work takes on such a unique perspective, a cloud-based workflow is ideal because it can be tailored to accommodate the specific needs of any large format print shop. This enables estimates and associated costs to be easily calculated, benefitting both the customer and the PSP.

“Jobs are frequently tiled, which requires breaking the image into multiple elements, produced on a variety of substrates, and with a multitude of finishing options. Printers must take into consideration unique imposition/layouts, material requirements, edge sealing, grommet placement, ink coverage, square inch/feet calculations, and substrate utilized to optimize workflow,” continues McWilliam.

Each one of these components can be combined in an infinite number of unique print jobs, with each differentiating factor triggering a separate cost. Asking for grommets plus sewing, an additional charge. In the cloud, all of these options can be contained into one pricing matrix.

“By having everything centralized, such as pricing, you can create any product you want and simply associate the new product to a pre-existing pricing matrix. There is no need to re-input the pricing. With a cloud system, you need only to turn on and off the setting that allows the PSP to activate the required technology,” explains Reuben Quesus, director of business development, Racad Tech, Inc.

Internally, a print shop’s staff benefits from file uploads and approvals generated from the cloud. “It sounds trite, but print providers spend significant time during the day checking FTP servers, emails, and attachments—where files often end up in spam folders as well,” admits Bart Fret, director of sales – large format, Americas, GMG Color.

Other features that are beneficial to staff more than the customer include the ability to track a project or job from order submittal to fulfillment. “To lose a project in a pile of papers is unacceptable in this technological age, you need to have the ability to see every project and where it is in the process,” says Aaron Clippinger, CEO, V Sign Software.

Collaboration is necessary in today’s business world and for those staff members dispersed geographically, the cloud simplifies revisions and the possibility for error. “The PSP may have one location producing the job while additional employees work in the field. Similarly, their customers may have several locations of their own business that need to place, approve, and oversee orders,” suggests Simmons.

“A collaborative dynamic job board where all shop team members can directly update the jobs they are responsible for and keep those jobs up to date as they move through production is ideal. Following this approach, a job status is more up to date and that status is viewable anywhere the user is on either mobile phones or desktop computers,” adds David Rudolph, founder, Pixta, Inc.

Referring to data collection and sharing, Eric Hall, CEO, CASper Eazynet Solutions, Inc., sees collaboration between all parts of an organization as an overwhelming trend. This includes project managers sharing job overviews, production managers sharing shop floor updates, employee time card input, payroll review, job costing, and control of materials used. “Forms, documents, sign offs, spreadsheets—whatever information is required—needs to be available for sharing as needed,” he says.

Easing Integration
While not a requirement, the cloud can make it simpler to implement an integrated, end-to-end workflow solution that includes tools like estimating, color management, job tracking, and proofing all rolled into one. “It makes it easier when there are multi-sites and different people that need to access features or information from a distance,” admits Sebastien Hanssens, VP marketing and communication, Caldera.

Historically, the commercial print space has successfully integrated management and workflow systems and implemented them as Software as a Service (SaaS). Many being single-vendor modular systems that handle all functions, shares Gallucci. “As services move to the cloud, they become more affordable for smaller shops. There are more opportunities for integrating systems from a variety of vendors, via open APIs and data exchange using XML and JDF,” he continues.

Carina Karlsson, CEO, arifiQ Development, agrees that the cloud has been very important in the development of API. “This directly makes it easier to implement any integrated software. It demands a more open architecture that gives new possibilities to link different software together.”

“Solving the communication issues between unique proprietary software solutions has always been—and probably will always remain—a significant technical hurdle. SaaS-based products offer a seamless transition through all critical areas of a workflow and remove the challenge of maintaining and supporting various proprietary systems,” cautions Hurwitch.

The actual implementation of an end-to-end workflow benefits from the cloud. “The cloud allows for pin point training, accurately reflecting the goals of an organization. Specific implementation plans are developed and processed through the cloud. Individual and group training is enhanced by clear company-specific processes presented visually end to end,” explains Hall.

Larry Moore, VP – partner programs, North America, Esko, argues that while there have been great strides in cloud-based applications, there isn’t one complete offering that addresses all aspects of an end-to-end workflow. “In fact, the applications that are considered cloud-based are really cloud interactive. Yes, there are products like digital storefronts. They are very good but in some manner they have to interact with a ground-based solution to be able to take the graphics file and apply the parameters from the cloud product.”

The Cloud Campaign
Vendors promote workflow in the cloud. In doing so, they bolster the message that a cloud-based workflow can be beneficial to a wide format print shop.

Aleyant highlights cloud-based workflow opportunities in every demonstration it gives, specifically displaying how the solutions play well with others. Free informational webinars show how jobs can flow between other vendors’ systems.

Caldera promotes prepress and organizational features and how they are best served in the cloud. This includes file submission, preflight of PDF files, and production monitoring.

“Workflow in the cloud is one tool. Whether or not Cyrious recommends it to a given PSP depends on their specific needs. During our initial conversations, we determine what their critical needs are and how their operation is configured,” shares Simmons.

Dalim encourages companies to leverage the cloud as a way to provide different solutions to their clients. “It is a lot easier because software is maturing and propelling us to provide non-proprietary Web-based solutions along with mobile applications to lower the technical barrier,” admits Blanks.

“One of the big advantages we already associate with digital is the ability to have real time or near real time production information capabilities available remotely via mobile devices,” says Mike Wozny, senior product manager, EFI. As such, EFI addresses that need from its VUTEk HS 100, HSr, and HS 125 Pro series customers with VUTEk Go. The remote monitoring application streamlines high-volume printing with real-time mobile print queue and press status monitoring.

“We like to focus on efficiencies. Just like any part of the workflow, you try to focus on how much print providers are spending on certain activities—like sending emails back and forth and checking FTP servers all day. We highlight these portions of their daily work and show how it can be better and faster,” explains GMG’s Fret.

InkSoft released its InkSoft Signs & Banners to show its dedication to Web-based applications. It is a 100 percent cloud-based ecommerce and workflow management solution designed specifically for sign business’ unique needs.

To promote the concept of the cloud in production workflow, SAi developed its mobile and smartphone applications that specifically target owners of print shops. “Since they are the key decision makers, giving them direct benefits of cloud-enabled workflow helps promote the cloud and raise interest in the technology,” adds Derhak.

“Our approach is to facilitate an open system where customers can integrate and automate all aspects of their workflow. We use cloud technologies to enable integration with solutions such as W2P and order tracking systems,” shares Onyx’s Manwaring.

Other Trends
Besides the cloud, other trends occur in workflow. A commonality is the need to meet demand for faster turnaround times at competitive prices.

Open communication is one hot topic. This is requested in regards to workflow solutions incorporating multiple printers from different manufacturers in addition to enabling software between vendors to talk to each other.

“Systems like these increase efficiency by reducing operator time working with files, and increase reliability and quality by using one renderer to color manage, RIP, and feed all devices,” explains Gallucci.

“It means more work can be done without increasing staff and jobs can be turned faster,” agrees Ciesemier.

These results play into two of the biggest trends Darrian Young, CEO, Tucanna, Inc., has noticed. “Print buyers are requiring faster turnaround times. Maintaining a competitive price is essential. Companies that fail to make their workflows more efficient in order to meet the tighter timelines and cost restraints have a hard time keeping up with their competitors,” he cautions.

Hanssens cites large format PSPs as requesting improvements in job tracking and being able to rely on real-time production information—both of which meet the demand of quicker turnaround times from customers while keeping costs down.

“PSPs are looking for ways to cut costs and reduce errors in the print shop and are looking for automation to help. Wide format printing is inherently complex and not always straightforward to automate,” admits Manwaring.

“New solutions should provide lower cost of administration by automizing the process both for the provider and the customer. The average print order value is getting lower and the number of orders is increasing. This makes administration overhead a bigger problem than ever,” suggests Karlsson.

Mark Smith, president/software developer, EstiMate Software, says PSPs finally realizing the need for automation in workflow is one of the biggest trends he has noticed. “Using software rather than pencil, paper, and pocket calculators to manage what is happening in quoting and production. This industry has been traditionally slower to adopt software solutions and now that the industry has come around it represents a great improvement in pricing and productivity.”

Service in the Cloud
While the cloud isn’t a fit for all PSPs, its benefits are summed up in improving collaboration between shop employees, peers, and customers. PSPs can manage files better thanks to the cloud. Efficiency in the backend of a shop allows print providers to cater to customers better and that translates to cost savings.

The printing industry is dynamic, always adapting and accelerating. This is especially true with textiles, a growth segment of the market. Print service providers (PSPs) add capabilities to print and finish textiles to attract buyers and boost revenue.

Digitally printed textiles are increasing in popularity, particularly within out-of-home advertising. Flags, banners, tents, and umbrellas created with digital are eye catching and interest any passerby. The possibilities are unlimited with the correct equipment, presenting businesses with endless opportunities.

Major Manufacturer
After buying the printing division of another business in 2008, Xarisma emerged as an advertising solutions company, providing printed textiles, print media, media displays, graphic design, and installation. Custom flags, banners, tents, and silicone edge graphics (SEGs) are some examples.

Based in Huntsville, AL, the company reaches the entirety of North America, including Canada, and also has partner divisions in China and Europe. A staff of 70 operate out of a 55,000 square foot facility. Of the services provided, 50 percent is textile printing. Although Xarisma promotes this service for multiple applications, the company finds that textiles are mostly requested for advertising purposes. Whether indoors or outdoors, flags, banners, or umbrellas, Xarisma is equipped to offer high-quality solutions.

“We develop our media and custom purchase it through mills. Currently, we acquire our own print media from China, Europe, and the U.S.,” says Jon Houser, partner, Xarisma. He believes the combination of high-quality media and printing equipment, as well as fast turnaround is the key to the PSP’s success.

Some of the materials used frequently on the textile side include a standard flag material referred to as SolarMax, which is U.S. made. Soft Knit is a versatile fabric used for indoor displays like banners and table covers. Poly 600 offers matte graphics for indoor use. Art Canvas is a high-end fabric for photo-quality prints that features strength for stretching around frames. Poly Satin is a high sheen, lightweight fabric ideal for indoor applications.

According to the company, it is considered one of the first major flag manufacturers to offer digitally printed textiles. “Textiles used in media advertisement are becoming more popular. Ten years ago there were very few companies like Xarisma printing textiles for trade shows and advertising. Now if you go to a trade show, a majority of the booths are manufactured from textiles,” adds Houser.

Technology Range
When the PSP first began digitally printing, it chose DuPont for flags and banners. As demand increased, the facility housed five DuPont printers. Today, Xarisma uses Durst Image Technology US printers to output onto textiles in addition to vinyl, rigid board, adhesive-based media, and paper.

The 126-inch Durst Rhotex 322 and 320 printers allow Xarisma to print on a range of media, including its own proprietary EverTex polyester used for flag applications. The 77-inch Durst Kappa 180 is a high-performance inkjet device that prints on different textile fibers with water-based dispersion, reactive, and acid dye inks. Besides Durst hardware, the PSP also owns Hewlett-Packard (HP) devices including the 96-inch hybrid HP Scitex FB700 Industrial Printer.

The Matic Cronos Plus sewing machine reduces production time and ensures precise seams for PVC/silicon keder, velcro, hemming, and reinforcements. Cronos is distributed in the U.S. by Media One Digital Imaging Solutions LLC. “The Cronos machines allow us to sew the textiles in a strict and controlled manner. It eliminates the need for holding the textile straight—as the machines do that for you,” explains Houser.

The newest addition to Xarisma’s production facility is a 126×125-inch Zünd G3 3XL 3200 digital cutter.

A Textile Workout
Xarisma recently created signage for CrossFit Huntsville. This regional CrossFit gym is situated in an old warehouse. It came to the PSP with the goal of transforming into an active exercise environment.

The total time from submittal to install took about three weeks and covered 3,000 square feet of media. The job included multiple applications, like an SEG textile frame, printed textiles, textile-based wall adhesives, and printed boards installed on the walls. Durst and HP printers, SEG graphics, the Matic Cronos Plus, and the Zünd G3 were all used.

Fabric included polyesters knitted from 150 to 300 grams per square meter, some of which were knit in house. “They were ideal because being flexible, they fit perfectly into an SEG frame,” explains Houser.

A few challenges were met during install. The job site was under construction by day, therefore Xarisma had to install at night. Three employees with scaffolding finished the work in three nights. The wall surfaces presented another challenge. There were many obstacles mounted on the walls—smoke sensors and electrical plugs—and the surfaces were not perfectly flat. Using precision and the right equipment, Xarisma maneuvered around each obstacle to finish in a timely fashion.

Houser says this job stands out from others because it covers design, production, and installation. It is a reflection of the typical work produced by Xarisma and is a beautiful display to showcase its capabilities.

Growing Textiles
As the demand for textile printing grows, PSPs accommodate by adopting and expanding their capabilities. From banners to flags and custom wallpaper, Xarisma continues to master each segment to stay ahead of competition.

RIPs are the heart of most print service providers’ (PSPs’) workflow and every business manager wrestles with the cost to benefit of keeping their software current. Some choose to subscribe to a maintenance program with ongoing updates as they occur, while others prefer the a la carte approach and update based on new hardware or efficiencies in the latest software products.

Most RIP vendors continue to enhance features and provide new product capabilities with their ongoing updates.

PSPs should stay up to date on their RIP software for a number of reasons, compatibility being a primary concern. Vendors often add productivity features and performance enhancements through releases—both major and minor. Additionally, upgrades often come with maintenance and support benefits.

When RIPs and other production software isn’t current, PSPs are at risk of not working with the latest drivers or being out of synch with the most recent PDF versions and other industry standards.

Current and Compatible
PSPs need to deliver products to customers on time and efficiently as possible to remain profitable and safeguard customer satisfaction.

“There are too many variables a PSP needs to manage to ensure production always runs smoothly. Managing all the changes in design tools affect production, updating operating systems on production workstations, and dealing with the ever-increasing complexity of files coming from customers is challenging,” admits Bryan Manwaring, director of product marketing, Onyx Graphics, Inc. “Our job as RIP providers is to understand and manage all of these potential pitfalls. Keeping their RIP up to date means they can rely on production for predictable results.”

Compatibility challenges often occur when RIPs are not current. “For example, an out-of-date PostScript interpreter can result in incorrect output that doesn’t match the designed file, forcing re-work and re-runs. In addition, out-of-date spot color libraries won’t have the very latest colors available, giving file errors or inaccurate output due to color definitions being substituted—bad news for corporate and brand color reproduction,” says Kerry Moloney, field and channel marketing manager, Fiery wide format, EFI.

In addition to working with the latest industry standards, RIP vendors include fixes and productivity improvements in both small updates and larger version upgrades. Dean Derhak, product director, SA International (SAi), points out that when PSPs don’t update, they put themselves at a competitive disadvantage compared to the print business down the street that stays current.

Support and maintenance incentives are also an attractive reason. Ashley Wanlass, senior marketing specialist, Wasatch Computer Technology, LLC, suggests that many PSPs regularly update their software to consistently have access to technical support.

PSP Habits
Proper maintenance is part of any investment, whether hardware or software. Manwaring recommends that customers plan for regular maintenance on their production equipment. “Print providers would not dream of completely neglecting maintenance on a printer, and the same should hold true for other production equipment, including RIP software,” he adds.

“By scheduling regular updates to RIP software and production workstations, taking advantage of the latest color and tooling improvements, and ensuring that production is running efficiently, PSPs can have confidence in their workflow process when crunch time comes,” continues Manwaring.

Derhak says in his experience, more profitable and competitive print providers do a good job with keeping their RIP software up to date. “The habit of keeping their software current is part of their overall business strategy of running at peak performance.”

Sebastien Hanssens, VP, marketing and communications, Caldera, agrees, noting that high-end PSPs are typically always using the latest software versions. “Others follow in due time when they find that they need the new features and improvements,” he observes.

Wanlass also sees a trend of those with more equipment and producing higher volumes prioritizing RIP updates, but admits there are many PSPs that do not upgrade. “These shops tend to be running older equipment that still work for them so they don’t see the benefit in upgrading their software.”

Derhak points out that many of SAi’s technical support calls are from PSPs that haven’t installed the latest update. “They mistakenly avoid updating their software when fixes are already available because they think it saves them time. But to be honest, the reverse is usually the case,” he explains.

“Whether through bad experiences or simple caution, making changes in production can feel like a risk, so inevitably most PSPs are hesitant to change anything. Unfortunately, this often means problems—including shutting down production—may come at unexpected times,” cautions Manwaring.

Upgrade Paths
The availability and ease of use associated with RIP software updates has improved with the advent of the Internet and cloud adoption. A process that used to entail shipped CDs and on-site visits is replaced with email links and notifications embedded within the software.

As Internet speeds increase and more production stations are connected, the process of upgrading software can become more automatic, says Manwaring.

Moloney adds that super-fast download and network speeds mean even the largest online databases are now possible, and are more convenient than waiting for a DVD to arrive or a technician to visit. “Users now prefer to see what’s new in their update via their software, rather than printed or PDF release notes.”

Derhak says RIP upgrades used to be difficult because they required users to replace their old hardware dongle or upgrade to a new one. “Now, users automatically receive an updated cloud-based software license and can simply download their software,” he offers.

Important Considerations
Ideally, RIP updates are meant to be seamless and easy to execute. However, every so often major updates require considerations beyond a click and download.

Print providers should consider reevaluating RIP software anytime they decide to make a new investment. “How many printers are they going to run from one RIP? How many images are they going to be RIPping and printing at once?” asks Wanlass. She advises PSPs make sure to have a computer that can keep up with their production.

“Smart PSPs upgrade their RIP software when they purchase new equipment, whether that is a new printer or a new PC running their RIP,” says Derhak. “RIP upgrades cost a fraction of hardware purchases, yet they can give a tremendous performance boost to the new equipment.”

In some cases, the improvements within a software update may take advantage of newer hardware.

“For example, with ONYX 12, we upgraded the entire platform to 64-bit, which delivers speeds twice as fast as previous versions. This update requires 64-bit hardware to run, but this has been commonplace for at least five years. For most customers, the equipment they already have will run great,” advises Manwaring.

Derhak says for modern RIP software, 64-bit PC hardware and the latest operating system will give PSPs the biggest bang for their buck.

“But our latest version software also works well on older 32-bit hardware so PSPs don’t have to upgrade their PC hardware to get performance improvements from their RIP upgrade,” he adds.

Moloney says operating system support is a consideration, and suggests users read the pre-installation information or visit the software vendor’s website for the latest information on system requirements and recommendations before proceeding with an update or upgrade if in doubt.

End User Perspective
PSPs should consider their RIPs as an important aspect of their business. Once the right RIP is in place, staying current with updates helps ensure the shop is running at its optimum capacity.

In business since 1973, Bannerville USA, Inc. provides light pole banners and services throughout the Midwest. The 17-employee shop operates two warehouse locations in Burr Ridge, IL, making up approximately 12,000 square feet.

The shop ran screenprinters until 2004 when it purchased its first digital printer. Today, it operates eight printers. In addition, the PSP relies on its RIP from Onyx, which it transitioned to in August 2015.

“For 11 years prior we were running a different RIP software on our printers. At the time, each of our seven printers had its own workstation, which caused a lot of repetitive steps for our production team,” explains Tom Sitkowski, VP of business development, Bannerville USA.

With ONYX Thrive, Sitkowski says the shop runs its fleet of printers from one main computer rather than separate workstations. “All files pass through our production manager to each printer, eliminating multiple hands touching each file,” he explains.

Sitkowski says Bannerville USA upgrades its RIP software whenever new versions are available. “It is best to stay up to date with the newest technology,” he recommends.

While the importance of software and RIP updates is definitely important, it is not always realistic for PSPs to keep up with each update or upgrade. Depending on the operation and allocation of resources, software updates weigh in at a different priority level for each shop.

Dan Johansen, GM, Instant Sign Center, runs a successful sign shop with two locations out of MA—Haverhill and Norwood—with a combined square footage of 30,000. Established in 1961, the company provides printed and fabricated products from sign and retail to event graphics.

The PSP runs an EFI Fiery RIP alongside its EFI VUTEk QS2 Pro UV hybrid printer. While the shop doesn’t update its RIP with every release, it did recently make one significant upgrade during the year they’ve had the product.

Johansen explains the shop can’t update with each release due to a lack of strong internal IT resources.

Essential Updates
While investing in the latest equipment is an obvious priority, software should not be dismissed. PSPs should re-evaluate their production tools often and remain current on the latest versions to ensure consistency and compatibility.
