Streamlining production and ramping up efficiency are constant goals of a print shop. One way to achieve both is through your RIP. Many of today’s solutions integrate with popular third-party applications (apps), which assist in automating a production floor from end to end.
The March issue of Digital Output includes a feature on this topic, but below we’ve included information on RIP solutions and their third-party app integrations.
AVA CAD/CAM Group Ltd.
AVA CAD/CAM creates software to facilitate the design and production of decorative print. It works with PrintFactory, which it credits as constantly adding new printer drivers to its vast range. The proliferation of digital printer models for decorative printing has led AVA CAD/CAM to stop writing new printer drivers on its own and partner with a PrintFactory, which specializes in this area.
Caldera
With the latest version of CalderaRIP—version 17—Caldera introduces its own REST API, enabling seamless integration of CalderaRIP with third-party apps such as web shops or ERP software. The REST API paves the way for more efficient job submission and improved job cost tracking. In addition, a bicubic resampling feature is incorporated in CalderaRIP, allowing operators to rescale images without pixelation issues, resulting in sharper and more detailed output. The SmartImport and PrintProof features also remain exclusive to CalderaCare subscribers—and with Version 17, users leverage the repeat_y metadata within SmartImport to set the desired number of vertical pattern repetitions, opening the door for automated wallpaper production.
Fiery, LLC
The Digital Factory v11 RIP is recently updated with completely redesigned UI. With this update, new tools are added; including Single Pass Highlight White Underbase for boosted white ink in a single printhead pass, Variable Data Wizard to instantly adjust text and images, DesignPro add-on modules for direct image creation and editing, and more. This update also includes the Next-Gen UI, with new themes and a completely redesigned interface, controls, and the true shape nesting feature. As Fiery continues to develop new features for inclusion in its RIP, it also constantly looks for new and useful ways to expand functionality through third-party integrations.
Global Graphics Software
SmartDFE is being quickly adopted by manufacturers of high-speed, single-pass inkjet printers, especially in the labels and packaging market. It integrates seamlessly with prepress PDF editing application PACKZ and workflow automation solution CLOUDFLOW, both from HYBRID Software. ColorLogic’s advanced color management technology is integrated for extended color gamut and brand colors, using a powerful SDK. And as SmartDFE is an inline RIP solution that doesn’t require the need to RIP ahead, but RIPs and prints simultaneously, the downstream raster delivery is integrated with printhead drive electronics from Meteor Inkjet. These are a few of the integrations implemented already, but using OPC UA there are almost no limits on the parts of the manufacturing process that Fiery can connect to, making increasing automation efficiency.
Onyx Graphics, Inc.
ONYX advances to version 22.5.1, further enriching ONYX 22. This update introduces the ONYX Color Reference Library that is intended to provide customers with a comprehensive color library designed for accurate color representation, ensuring precise customer expectations are met.
It also enhanced nesting control for flatbed printing and automated jig printing, alongside a drag-and-drop interface. As a part of a continued commitment toward automation, Onyx integrated the capability to embed basic RIP control settings directly into a file name.
In addition to these advancements, Onyx offers ONYX Archive, a robust solution for job archiving and retrieval, ensuring work is secure and easily accessible. The latest Adobe APPE RIP technology is incorporated. Last but not the least, support is updated for XY cutters, ensuring users have access to the latest in precision cutting technology.
Roland DGA Corp.
Roland VersaWorks 6 has seen significant updates that enhance its performance and feature set. These updates include new user interfaces, advanced color management tools, and improved processing capabilities. However, as a closed system, VersaWorks primarily focuses on delivering a seamless experience with Roland DG hardware rather than integration with third-party apps. This approach ensures that end users benefit from a highly optimized and reliable printing process, albeit with a focus on the ecosystem provided by Roland itself, including DGConnect and its subscription programs. DGConnect from Roland is a machine monitoring app designed to help users gain a detailed understanding of their entire print operation. Use of this app helps users keep their Roland devices running at optimum print performance, reducing downtime and improving work efficiency.
SAi
SAi Flexi is the only all-in-one design, print, and cut software for sign and print providers. With nearly three out of four shops using it, Flexi is the industry standard for sign-specific design tools, RIP software, print-and-cut software, and direct vinyl cutting, according to the company
Xitron
In August of 2023, Xitron celebrated its 5,000th Navigator DFE installation. Inkjet work with Memjet and HP through its API has facilitated market expansion through OEMs such as Printware, Quadient, Kirk-Rudy, Arrow Systems, Paper Converting Machine Company, FP Mailing, Winkler+Dunnebier, and Simply Inkjet. On the commercial offset side of the business—an installed base of over 45,000 users—the integration of HYBRID Software and Ultimate Technologies’ IP allows Xitron to replace older workflows using outdated and obsolete applications with a level of automation and functionality not previously available.
Streamlining Production
RIP enhancements enable print providers to be at the top of their game. Adding in third-party apps to further productivity is an impactful proposition.
