Print service providers (PSPs) branch out to offer different substrates as a way to extend their product offerings into original environments and applications. Aluminum composite material (ACM), while not new, is considered a great stepping stone to printing/finishing more alternative/less-used materials.
Aesthetically, it offers a unique finish and appearance; and a practical advantage is ACM’s ability to provide excellent durability in outdoor applications.

Meeting the Demand
Buyer expectations continue to push PSPs to work outside of their comfort zone. Two points of interest according to Chuck Kunze, director, display product solutions marketing, 3A Composites USA, are an increase in demand for sustainability and print compatibility across multiple technologies. ACM meets both of these criteria.
“Brand and retail clients request recyclability, recycled content, and end-of-life pathways. This influences not only the choice of materials but design decisions regarding the life of the final product in use,” shares Kunze. ACM offers a long life and depending on the brand of material, aluminum facers may be able to be recycled after use.
In regards to print compatibility, “buyers no longer want a substrate that only runs on one press. They want media that performs on UV, latex, and eco-solvent because their partners run mixed fleets,” shares Kunze. ACM is directly printable using UV flatbed printers. Also, it’s possible to print via latex, aqueous, or eco-solvent printers onto vinyl, and then mount that vinyl to ACM.
In addition to sustainability and print compatibility, ACM offers other advantages in relation to its construction and materials. Exceptional flatness and print surface, lightweight yet rigid, weather and UV resistance, fabrication flexibility, multiple finishes and colors, and fire-rated options, lists Kunze.
Furthermore, ACM features dimensional stability across different temperatures. “Unlike other rigid substrates used in signage and graphic display applications, ACM does not sag, bow, or expand meaningfully with heat and cold swings, which is critical for large format outdoor work,” says Kunze.
ACM commands a higher price point over corrugated plastic, foamboard, or styrene. “Clients accept that premium because the finished product looks and lasts noticeably better. This means better margins per square foot for the PSP,” adds Kunze.
With the margin opportunity higher, leveraging ACM in anyway possible makes sense—and luckily its versatility across multiple end use segments feeds right into this. “One substrate serves point of purchase displays, exterior signage, trade show graphics, architectural wayfinding, real estate, transit graphics, and fine art reproduction. This means fewer SKUs to stock, faster turnaround, and simpler quoting,” explains Kunze.
Kunze suggests ACM thrives in construction and job site signage, project boards, and graphics for general contractors and developers; restaurant and hospitality menus and décor exterior menu boards, patio signage, and branded wall panels for QSR chains and independent operators as well.
ACM is also used for interior design. For example, 3A Composites introduced an ACM interior wall panel solution called MONARC. With DIBOND as the base material, a specialized and proprietary manufacturing process allows MONARC wall panels to be produced with high-quality finishes in stone, wood, and metal designs, ideal for kitchen, bath, and shower enclosure applications as well as for living room accents and other interior living space treatments.
ACM at Your Service
3A Composite’s DIBOND is a premium ACM known for its exceptional flatness, durability, lightweight construction, and fabrication versatility. It delivers high-quality print performance across UV, latex, eco-solvent, and other printing technologies. Its portfolio includes fire-rated options, a variety of colors and finishes, and the specialty interior wall panel solution MONARC. DIBOND offers long-term durability, dimensional stability, weather resistance, and strong revenue opportunities for PSPs.
ALPOLIC Materials offers GRAPHIC-AL DP made for direct print applications and offers superior UV-curable ink adhesion. It is constructed from two thin pieces of aluminum heat bonded to a polyethylene (PE) foamed core. The direct print, high-polymer polyester finish is applied through a continuous coating process, resulting in an exceptionally smooth surface. It offered in a three millimeter (mm) thickness and 48×96-inch panels.
Alumanate manufactures in the U.S. Its Alumanate Signage is a solid core ACM panel that is ultra smooth, maintenance free, and long lasting. In addition, Alumanate Signage is excellent for all types of printing, painting, die cutting, routing, and mounting. It features an enhanced PE coating specifically for direct to substrate UV and latex printing. The surface of Alumanate PE coated panels provides enhanced adhesion for UV curing and solvent-based inks.
Curbell Plastics’ exclusive C-TEK ACM panels offer dimensional stability and a metallic look at half the weight of aluminum, according to the company. Each panel is an ultra smooth, maintenance free, three-layer sandwich panel consisting of two pre-painted aluminum sheets bonded to a PE core. Long-lasting C-TEK ACM panels are digitally printable, can be cut, routed, and bent, and are available in several metallic finishes and thicknesses.
Laminators Inc.’s Alumalite Standard is a strong, aluminum composite panel with a high-density corrugated polypropylene core that will not swell, corrode, rot, wick water, or delaminate even under prolonged water exposure. It is ideal for both UV and solvent printing. It is available in six and ten mm sheet thicknesses. Alumalite Economy and Alumalite Ultra are part of the Alumalite family of products and are available in other thicknesses to support additional applications.
Nudo’s Poly-Metal sign panels are comprised of a recycled thermoplastic core sandwiched between two sheets of finished aluminum on one or two sides. The recycled thermoplastic core lends itself to resisting moisture. Poly-Metal panels also feature the ability to digitally print direct to the panel, allowing for design flexibility.
Piedmont Plastics supplies AluPOLY Digital ACM, a printable ACM solution. Understanding that projects come with varied requirements, Piedmont Plastics offers AluPOLY in four distinct grades—Economy, Standard, Premium, and HS. Each of these grades comes in a variety of sheet sizes, thicknesses, colors, and finishes.
Buyer Beware
Imported ACM is commonplace and PSPs should be aware of the challenges this can present.
Kunze stresses that PSPs new to ACM shouldn’t buy on price and instead focus on capability.
“Understanding the limits of cheap, imported ACM is key. Most use aluminum alloys that are not optimized for fabrication—they can be brittle and thin, limiting the ability to fold the panel without cracking. Also, most imported ACM include waste/recycled material in the core, which compromises material properties and contributes to premature wear of cutting tools,” says Kunze.
Leveraging ACM
Media versatility is an important competitive advantage for PSPs. ACM continues to be a valuable substrate, even though it has been available for many years.
According to Kunze, ACM helps increase revenue and margins in a print shop by positioning the PSP as a premium provider, one that can offer quality ACM work that eventually may lead to cross-selling opportunities and recurring contracts.
“An ACM client buying exterior signage today is a candidate for interior wayfinding, trade show graphics, vehicle panels, and branded environments tomorrow. One substrate, many product categories. Franchise rollouts, multi-location retailers, and property management firms often sign multi-year sign programs. ACM’s durability makes it the natural spec for those contracts,” concludes Kunze.
ACM offers both practical and aesthetic advantages.
