Part one of this two-part series reviews traditional framing systems and why they are a popular alternative for finishing graphics. Due to cost efficiency and ease of use, snap-and-shut frames remain a go-to option for retail, restaurants, movie theaters, and sports centers. Here, we provide an overview of traditional framing systems.
Traditional Framing Systems
3DA Display Hanging LED Snap Frames feature an edge-lit LED diffuser panel for light distribution and brightness. The frames are aluminum or silver, and open from the front for quick access without tools. It includes clear protective lenses and is fully assembled and ready to hang. Intended environments include permanent retail displays, corporate environments, and trade show graphics.
Accenta Display Corporation markets the ThinLite 2 for a snap-open, backlit display that is environmentally friendly. The frame requires little to no maintenance and provides lighting without damaging the image. It is a lightweight and thin lightbox made of anodized aluminum. The frame’s largest standard size is 30×40 inches and it is also available in custom sizes. Its LED light is capable of lasting from 50,000 to 70,000 hours, 24/7 for at least five years.
Access Display Group, Inc. features several traditional framing systems including SwingFrames and snap-and-shut frames. Poster SwingFrames are available in metal and natural wood profiles for an interior environment. The company offers custom frame profile styles in over 50 colors and 100 matte board colors. SwingFrame systems have a permanent Coroplast or PVC backing board within the frame and swing open by sliding a lock. The snap frames are offered with a rigid board backing and a clear or non-glare acrylic overlay to protect thin printed graphic sheet inserts.
Displays2go offers several snap-open frames including waterproof outdoor frames. Made of rust-proof aluminum, the Outdoor Poster Frame for wall mount use is a snap-open frame that locks with an Allen key. Its sides release quickly and the frame features an anti-reflection case to prevent glare or sunlight. The frame is built with interior rubber gaskets to make it 100 percent weather proof.
Rose Displays Ltd. features the FreedromFrame aluminum frame with snap rails, full-length snap hinges, and corrugated plastic backer board that is durable and lightweight. FreedomFrames are custom sized and available in sizes up to 46×94 inches. The frame is offered in clear and black anodized aluminum as square or round.
Tex Visions offers the Snap Frame LED Lightbox with a maximum size of 36×48 inches. The frame features holes on the back to mount onto walls. Snap Frame LED Lightboxes range from $173 to $463. When the frame is used as a displayed Snap Frame LED Lightbox, it uses a backlit film—for wall mounting the frames are used with photopaper or vinyl. The LED lights on Tex Vision’s frames provide lighting without hotspots and feature an anti-glare protective cover. It is best used for environments in retail, offices, restaurants, night clubs, museums, and exhibitions.
VKF Renzel USA Corp. features snap frames and slide-in frames. The snap frame is a front-loading frame while the slide-in features an open siding or top to slide. VKF offers aluminum snap frames starting at 4×6 inches and custom sizes. Anodized aluminum is available in a black or silver finish, with or without a back panel or front cover. The frame anchors to the wall and screws are provided with an optional foam or magnetic tape. There is no limitation to what environment VKF’s frames are used in.
Walls+Forms, Inc. offers several framing systems including the Sekure and Marquee Frame, the VersaFlex Frame System, CornerForms Panel Connectors, and the T2 Modular Frame System. The Sekure and Marquee Frame are offered in standard sizes as large as 36×48 inches or in custom sizes. Both are available in clear satin anodized and black anodized finishes. The frames are factory mitered for precise clean edges. Walls+Forms offers raw backer board, fluted plastic, polystyrene, dry erase laminate, and acrylic for illuminated applications for backer board options. The frame is installed directly to any solid surface using screws or foam tape and is ideal for all interior applications and some exterior applications.
Snap and Shut
As tension framing systems continue to trend, traditional framing systems hold their ground. Currently a great selection of snap-and-shut frames are available to choose from that are safe for graphics and create a professional looking appearance.
