That Winning Feeling

Winning isn’t everything, but it can certainly be fun. In wide format print, print service providers (PSPs) have ample chances to show off what they can do, generating interest from peers, vendors, and potential customers. The opportunity comes in the form of industry contests, which are held in a variety of formats and offer various incentives.

Heather Kendle, director of marketing and product management, Inca Digital, notes two primary types of contests, the first are those open to the entire print community, usually through a third-party organization like a trade show host; the second being vendor-sponsored contests held to showcase exceptional work created with the sponsor’s equipment or media. For this article, we focus on vendor-sponsored contests.

In addition to the type of contest, entry submission and judging are other differentiating factors. For example, many contests stem from the Web and social media. These typically entail online voting by peers or involve a carefully selected judging panel. In addition, live contests—such as wrap battles on a trade show floor—represent another outlet for competition.

“Photo contests work well, and they’re quick and easy for the customer. Social media makes it easy to upload, hashtag, and enter. Plus most customers already have photos of their work on their phones,” comments Tiffany Wakimoto, marketing manager, Roland DGA Corporation.

Samantha Bishop-Strand, digital marketing specialist, 3M Commercial Solutions, notes that live contests tend to be more involved. “These contests, based on speed or skill, are a great opportunity to showcase talent and creativity,” she offers.

Contest Advantages
An obvious advantage to entering a contest is the chance at a grand prize. But, the benefits don’t end there. For example, Rick Moore, GM, Mactac Distributor Products, acknowledges that PSPs enter contests for a variety of other reasons. “From a competitive standpoint, winning offers a sense of pride and accomplishment, but also can help to establish or further the business’ brand capital. PSPs also enter to expand their reach, and some genuinely want to share their unique and interesting projects to assist others in the development of their expertise,” he says.

Kendle suggests that if a competition winner is a proactive marketer, they can leverage an award to attract more business. “We’ve seen award winners doing just that, producing their own press releases and promotional materials for their customer bases,” she notes, adding that the ability to boast to their prospects and customers that their work is recognized as some of the best in the world is a primary advantage.

Bishop-Strand says that while prizes are nice, the real value is exposure. Hosting vendors and the businesses that enter these contests publicize them outside of the industry. “Because of this, it’s a great way to reach people that may be considering a wrap for their business or personal vehicles, or who many not even know wrapping is an option,” she explains.

Contests provide an opportunity for PSPs to see what others in the industry are working on. “New trends and never-before-seen uses of the films often stem from competitive nature. To be the best, installers have to be creative and on the forefront of industry trends,” states Abby Gibbs, channel programs manager, Avery Dennison Graphics Solutions.

Despite the benefits, some PSPs are hesitant to put themselves out there.

“I think some of the main reasons why a PSP would not enter a contest would be lack of visibility or knowledge of the contest, lack of time, and most importantly, not wanting to share intellectual material that they do not have license for, or avoiding providing clear visibility to the competition regarding their client portfolio,” says Moore.

While Kendle doesn’t see any reason not to enter a competition, she admits that it could be that a shop is afraid that their customers would get upset if the entry doesn’t win. “On the other hand, a customer should be flattered that the PSP is proud of the work they have done on their behalf,” she points out.

“It might also be intimidating for some to feel like they’re being compared to industry veterans and compete against some well-known names,” says Bishop-Strand.

Gibbs agrees, suggesting that because of the creative nature of the community, designers and installers are sometimes reluctant to share a new look they created. In addition to putting their work out in the open, they are afraid it leaves them vulnerable to client poaching.

Depending on contest rules, the time and resources that need to be dedicated to entering is another factor. Entry requirements for many contestants include using a specific film and submitting specific photos. “It can be time consuming for a busy shop to stop production to take the right shots and upload them to the website,” admits Bishop-Strand.

Moore points out that although no assurances can quiet some of these concerns, the fear of creating competition should be alleviated by the benefits of winning. “The publicity, free advertising, and credibility outweigh the risk of losing the client to competition—if anything it strengthens the partnership,” he adds.

Additionally, working together and sharing experiences makes for a stronger industry. “The graphic and wrap communities grow together and the potential is still unrealized,” says Gibbs. “These contests help the industry thrive by giving it more exposure, which is good for everyone involved.”

While prizes may not be the only reason for businesses to enter a contest, Kendle notes that is often a significant incentive on the part of the sponsoring organization to attract more entries.

Wrapping to Win
Shadow Graphix, a 14-employee shop based in Indianapolis, IN, provides a variety of design and printing services within its 7,000 square foot facility. The company won 3M’s Wrap to Win contest, held between November 2014 and March 2015.

Keith Wethington, production manager, Shadow Graphix, is excited to talk about his role in the contest. He was heavily involved in the creation of the winning entry, a challenging ice cream truck wrap that helped transform business for the client. The customer came to the shop from Fort Wayne, IN, about a two hour drive. The truck was in rough shape and needed a lot of work to get to what Wethington describes as “wrap ready.” The team was up to the challenge, and after hearing about the 3M contest, decided this job would be an ideal representation of its capabilities.

Since the truck was brought to Shadow Graphix during the business owner’s slow season, it had time to chip away at it and really make it show ready. The wrap was meaningful, as the client was turned away by two of its local shops and really appreciated the commitment from Shadow Graphix. “Wrapping vehicles is always a neat experience, but when you touch someone that had a bad experience, it makes it special,” comments Wethington.

In addition to meeting customer expectations, the wrap was completed with the 3M Wrap to Win contest in mind. Entries had to be wrapped using 3M Envision Print Wrap Films and 3M Envision Wrap Overlaminates, media the shop was familiar with at the time of the contest, but hadn’t worked with too much at the time.

The contest was twofold, including a mix of public, online voting as well as a panel of judges. Once Shadow Graphix made it to the semi-finals, it flew to Las Vegas, NV for the announcement, which took place during the 2015 ISA Expo. Wethington, as well as shop owner, Daren Merkle, and the client, made the trip to Las Vegas.

“It was one of best things I was ever part of,” says Wethington of the contest. “Besides the national exposure, it was great meeting some of the other contestants and establishing a relationship with them,” he adds. The team was also able to interact with elite wrappers from around the world.

Since the contest, the shop was inducted into Masters of Branding, an installer-driven community. “Winning the contest supported our position in the industry and what Daren built,” shares Wethington.

Hard Work Pays Off
In addition to business drivers, vendor-sponsored contests offer great prizes. The chance to win a trip to Walt Disney World through the Avery Dennison Summer of Magic Giveaway caught the eye of Shareef Khan, founder, SS Customs, Luxury and Exotic Vehicle Enhancement Studio.

Based in Redwood City, CA, the six-employee shop provides vehicle enhancement services to the automotive aftermarket industry. The second-generation vinyl wrap studio was established in 2005 and is situated in a 3,000 square foot facility.
Khan says the idea to enter the contest sparked when promotions popped up on his social media feeds in early Summer 2015. “Like many business owners, I don’t have a lot of free time. I work late hours and unfortunately my family doesn’t get as much time with me as I feel they should. I have a two-and-a-half year old son and when I saw the contest, I immediately thought of him,” says Khan.

The Summer of Magic Giveaway encouraged PSPs to upload a photo of their family, children, or pets helping in their shop. The public voted for the best picture over a span of eight weeks.

For the entry, Khan selected a project for Pagani, an automobile manufacturer. “We were asked to create a design for one of its North American cars, specifically the naked carbon Huayra. It was one of the coolest projects we did that year,” he explains.

The photo submitted was a picture of Khan’s son inside of the car. Khan says that to help get the job done in time, his wife and son came by on some of the late nights. During one visit his son sat in the car and gave a thumbs up—his first thumbs up ever. Khan snapped a photo and used it to enter the contest.

He says participating in the contest was both fun and nerve wracking. “We wanted to win for the sake of our son, but we were battling some fierce competition, including some of our good friends in the industry.”

Overall, Khan shares that contests are all in good fun and he’d be happy to enter another. “Who doesn’t like a good contest, especially when it involves a product you trust and use every day—and when the prize involves Disney World!” he exclaims.

Eye on the Prize
PSPs often get buried in managing the day to day. Contests provide an opportunity to step back and take pride in accomplishments. Entering a friendly competition helps to bring out the best in a community, providing peer networking opportunities as well as showcasing the latest capabilities of today’s technologies.

Building wraps use a variety of substrates. Some of the most popular are mesh, perforated window media, and banner material. The media used is dependent on the building. Architectural structures range from glass to concrete. Graphics are in areas where wind, precipitation, and UV rays affect wrap quality. It’s essential that a print service provider (PSP) be prepared to wrap any surface type.

Proprietary Positioning
MetroMedia Technologies, Inc. (MMT), based in New York, NY, began in 1987. In its 26-plus years in existence, the company pioneered the digitalizing process of banners and billboards with its proprietary technology—a 32-foot wide printer that completes much of its large scale work.

150 employees round out the current staff, which excels in visual communications in the form of billboards, wall murals, backdrops, and trade show graphics. These applications are crafted in a 60,000 square foot space for high-profile clients located nationwide.

According to Abhi Vyas, VP, marketing, MMT, building wraps have gained a lot of publicity in the last eight to ten years. “It’s the nature of a supersized culture. A growing segment, we notice a lot more brands attracted to it. However, many city municipal codes prevent building wraps from even being installed—so it is hard to grow the application because of this,” he shares.

Popular geographical areas where building wraps are found include Los Angeles, CA, says William Ishida, COO, MMT, citing the weather as the overwhelming differentiator. Most wraps are never installed in freezing cold temperatures, as it makes the media challenging to work with and apply.

MMT relies on a number of media options for its building wrap work, but Ishida finds that in recent years perforated window film has been a popular choice. “Most building wraps use to be mesh, but now there are a lot of glass buildings that do not lend themselves to mesh, so adhesive media works best,” he explains. The staff regularly uses Clear Focus Imaging, Inc.’s products for job requests that benefit from an adhesive-backed media.

For the last three years, the PSP has rotated out building wrap graphics in one location for a regular client. It finds itself printing a 172×72-foot wrap on a monthly basis. Change outs are requested as advertisers schedule space and in each case the turnaround from job submittal to finished product is tight. In less than 24 hours both printing and finishing is completed on these projects. MMT usually outsources the install.

The frequency at which MMT creates the building wraps for this specific location necessitated that it develop a cutter just for this one application. The building is made up of 19 glass panels, with 18 metal mulligans separating the panels to create individual windows. When it comes to the graphics, this equates to 74 separate sections of media printed, cut, and shipped on a monthly basis.

Each wrap is printed on one of its five-meter wide printers. Media brand used varies, but it is almost always an adhesive-based perforated window film because the final graphic adheres to glass. When a Clear Focus product is chosen, it is usually due to its proven reliability in the field and quality of the product.

Practice makes perfect and MMT’s continuous work with the aforementioned customer allows it to refine its building wrap talents.

Custom Commitment
Located in Dallas, TX, XL Digital Imaging, LLC began 13 years ago as a billboard and banner printer. Today it offers vehicle wraps and wallscapes to floor, fabric, and window graphics. A diverse client base includes independent print brokers, advertising agencies, trade show companies, trade shops, and national accounts. It categorizes about 30 percent of its work in the realm of billboard and banners, with building wraps a small fraction of that.

A staff of 25 works out of a 30,000 square foot shop. Hardware found on site includes dye-sublimation, flatbed, and grand format equipment, specifically a PrinterEvolution Evo33 DS and three EFI wide format printers—VUTEk GS3250, VUTEk GS5000r, and VUTEk 5330.

For its larger jobs, XL Digital regularly works with 70/30 mesh from Value Vinyls, the Rio 8 oz. Deluxe Mesh Vinyl Banner. Jack Padgett, GM, XL Digital, says it is both economical and durable, and reproduces well when printed on.

The print provider does not handle the install on any of its building wraps, as a result a project’s finishing aspect is often dictated by the agency placing the order. About 95 percent of the time, reinforced webbing and grommets are used, with a small percentage d-rings.

XL Digital believes in a true commitment to its customers. “We are a highly progressive and aggressive digital printing company specializing in making it happen. When we say we are going to do something, we do it,” adheres Padgett.

A recent job for Fellowship Bible included several large banners to promote the congregation. XL Digital printed a total of 10,500 square feet of Value Vinyls’ Rio 8 oz. Deluxe Mesh Vinyl Banner on an EFI VUTEk GS5000r. Padgett says the mesh product was specifically chosen for this project because it is durable and ideal for outdoor use. The banners were finished with reinforced hems and then grommets were added as the final step. In total the project for Fellowship Bible took a day and a half, from approval to delivery.

While XL Digital is not contracted to print superwide building wrap jobs on a frequent basis, it still regularly works in the realm of grand format and its banner work for Fellowship Bible is an excellent example of this.

Pop Culture
About five miles from the Las Vegas strip, Las Vegas, NV-based Off The Wall Signs & Graphics is strategically positioned to capitalize on a booming geographical building wrap location. Rocky Faith started an installation company in 2005 and recognizing the need to bring print in house, Off The Wall was founded in 2009.

The company specializes in grand format but is a full-service production shop, offering print, install, and design services all under one roof. 16 employees work in a 10,000 square foot space serving clients mostly located in the Southwest.

Its main workhorse is a Hewlett-Packard (HP) Latex 3000 wide format printer and media usage varies depending on the project in question.

For many of its building wrap requests the PSP finds itself turning to Arlon Graphics, LLC’s DPF 47WF. According to Mariela Faith, co-owner, Off The Wall, the company has used this material for both short- and long-term projects. “The application is ideal for install because the product is light without compromising the adhesiveness of it,” she shares.

High-profile building wraps recently placed Off The Wall in the limelight. It was contacted by several television networks to create graphics displays in San Diego, CA during Comic Con. One was to promote Conan O’Brien’s late night show, Conan. “The goal was to have the biggest presence in San Diego to target the Comic Con conventioneers,” explains Faith.

About 35,000 square feet of Arlon DPF 47WF was printed on using the HP Latex 3000. The layout took a week and the graphics were printed in two weeks—with projects from other clients mixed in. In total it was a month long process from the time the PSP received the artwork, sent out color match proofs, printed, finished, and then installed the building wrap.

Off The Wall also created a Comic Con building wrap for ABC’s new primetime comedy, The Muppets, using Arlon DPF 6700 with Series 3220 overlaminate. 11,875 square feet of media was printed on the HP Latex 3000. For this specific graphic, Faith says Arlon DPF 6700 was chosen because it holds up well and the team loves how it handles during install.

While Off The Wall does have its own installation team in house, the size and scope of the Comic Con building wraps necessitated that it partner with Above All Media in Irvine, CA.

It was not the first time the company found itself creating graphics for Comic Con, it has completed print jobs for the event the last four years. “Though there are changes from year to year, we have a great staff that makes sure everything runs smoothly,” shares Faith.

Taking on notable jobs for the entertainment industry places Off The Wall in a special category of PSP. Its management and staff parlay their knowledge of building wraps into pop culture.

A Successful Trio
Each building wrap is different and the media used is constantly changing. It is important print providers understand and educate themselves on the various available media options and the buildings and environments those materials are most compatible with.

From perforated window media to mesh, media manufacturers are enhancing portfolios to ensure print providers are equipped with the best tools for the job. Matching the material to the building and its environment while keeping in mind how long it will be in place is essential.

Print service providers (PSPs) enter new markets and offer new applications in direct response to the ability of UV inks to print on multiple substrates—significantly impacting the direction of the graphic arts.

Since its introduction in the early 2000s, the chemical composition of UV ink continues to transform by addressing the need for increased adhesion, flexibility, and curing. LED-based UV inks, which enable printing on even thinner substrates because less heat is used to dry or cure the print, further propel changes.

Human- and machine-based influences effect this ink segment. Scientists must remain aware of customer demand for versatile ink sets while engineering consumables that match the newest printhead configurations. With the influx of options, the cost of UV ink has decreased in recent years, allowing more PSPs to work within this critical segment.

Rate of Adoption
UV ink’s rate of adoption is increasing. The 2015 SGIA Specialty Graphics Industry Survey Benchmarking Report Graphics & Sign Community, held between January and February 2015, reports that UV-curable flatbed purchases are expected to increase. 7.3 percent of shops surveyed plan on buying a UV flatbed in 2015, which is up over 2014’s buying plan of 4.1 percent.

According to internal statics from EFI, UV inkjet overall continues to grow, with a 19 percent year-over-year increase in EFI UV inkjet ink volumes between Q2 2014 and Q2 2015. “The 2015 FESPA Print Census produced by FESPA and Infotrends indicated that UV is the most popular planned purchase decision. 27 percent of respondents in that census survey said their next printer purchase would be a UV inkjet printer and that was the number one response,” cites Mark Goodearl, senior product manager, inkjet solutions, EFI.

“UV technology enjoys a high rate of adoption because of the possibilities this technology enables such as printing on almost any substrate. This is more so in the graphic arts. In the last few years, the overwhelming majority of PSPs purchased UV and UV LED printers, sometimes solely and sometimes in addition to solvent or water-based printers,” shares Guy Evron, marketing manager, Bordeaux Digital PrintInk.

Growth won’t slow anytime soon, with the conversion to UV not even on many PSPs’ radars. “There are companies adhering printed media to rigid substrates who should be printing to them directly. Even jobs are still produced through screenprinting due to volume and/or costs that will eventually be digitally printed,” observes Larry Salomon, VP, wide format, Agfa Graphics.

Chemical Changes
Manufacturers continue to make improvements to critical elements of UV ink’s composition, such as adhesion, flexibility, and curing. Peter Saunders, business director – digital, Sun Chemical Corporation, walks through the initial chemical construction process many scientists embarked on in the early days of UV inkjet. It was all about getting the ink and printhead to work together reliably so integrators could build hardware around the printhead.

“As systems developed and media capability widened, the inks had to perform across even wider material types, cure fast, respond to pinning, run in faster systems, reliably print with smaller droplets, work in high-frequency printheads and different printhead materials, and be compatible with new media types,” he continues.

In the past ten years, the choice of raw materials used in an ink’s chemicals expanded. “This gives UV chemists the ability to choose from a wider range of monomers, oligomers, and photoinitiators in the development of ink. Monomers and oligomers are chosen based on whether the substrate being printed is rigid or flexible. Different ink sets are developed for plastics, coated papers, glass, wood, coated metals, packaging, and wallcoverings,” shares Heather Rockow, UV business development manager, Collins Inkjet.

Richard Dunklee, global market segment manager – UV inkjet inks, Nazdar, believes this variety of raw materials is a differentiator. “It allows us to formulate inks with specific properties, such as low migration, extreme adhesion to a certain class of substrates, or extreme flexibility.” This is a benefit and a challenge, he cautions. “For general purpose UV inks, we must look very closely at each newly available ingredient to make sure that its benefits don’t negatively impact another important property of the ink.”

Some advancements were noticed in the past two years, admits Craig T. Reid, VP/GM – digital division, INX International Ink Co. “Adhesion to anything and everything—while remaining flexible to not crack or chip and being cured multiple ways—are leading the list of requirements.”

In regards to flexibility, “it used to be the domain of solvent inks, but new formulations of UV inks are enabling greater pliancy,” explains Ken VanHorn, director, marketing and business development, Mimaki USA, Inc.

UV inks are generally hard and cure almost instantly. “The taller the droplet is, the harder it is, and the less likely it is the ink will be flexible. In the past if you wanted to do a car wrap with UV ink, it was nearly impossible,” says Adam Larson, global portfolio manager – premium films, 3M Commercial Solutions.

Part of the change in chemical composition is the introduction of UV LED. “We feel the industry is trending more towards LED for power usage and heat output. More substrates can be used and distortion of the material is less of a concern,” shares Chuck McGettrick, sales manager digital inks, Marabu North America.

VanHorn refers to UV LED technology as “cold” curing, enabling a PSP to print and cure thinner plastics and papers. “UV LED lamps only heat when curing, don’t require lengthy startup cycles, and draw much less power than conventional lamps,” he continues.

Curable and LED
UV is divided into two categories, UV LED and UV-curable. Their chemical compositions and functionality differ, in addition to how they react in the curing process—which is dictated by the type of lamp used.

In basic terms, both variations of UV ink feature photoinitiators that respond to different wavelengths, UV LED to a smaller range and UV-curable to a larger range—which is why UV LED ink uses less heat then UV-curable ink in the drying process.

“In a standard UV ink there are multiple initiators. LED ink usually uses just one initiator. The different initiators affect the curing of the ink at different wavelengths and therefore at different levels of the ink and substrate,” continues McGettrick.

“The fundamental difference is the incorporation of photosensitive materials that maximize the ink’s response to the chosen wavelength of the monochromatic LED light. The polymerization—or cure—is started by materials that respond to the differing wavelength in LED systems,” explains Saunders.

Jay Roberts, product manager, UV printers, Roland DGA Corporation, compares UV-curable and UV LED inks in regards to functionality. “UV-curable inks tend to be more aggressive, bonding to a slightly greater surface area. Substrates printed on UV-curable inks also have a tendency to bubble, buckle, yellow, and wave. UV LED inks can have a less aggressive bond to substrates without a more aggressive chemical bonding agent.”

The manner which UV and UV LED react during the curing process is based on the photoinitiators found in the ink. “Photoinitiators are chosen based on whether the curing device is a mercury arc lamp—traditional UV—or an LED curing unit,” explains Rockow.

According to Dunklee, inks designed for mercury arc curing typically have a blend of photoinitiators that respond to many different wavelengths simultaneously, and some contain an initiator that reacts to the specific wavelength being output by an LED lamp. However, the cure may not be as efficient or complete if the ink has been exposed to a multi-chromatic UV bulb.

“This situation can lead to two problems. If the ink doesn’t contain a photoinitiator that can react to the LED wavelength, it will not cure. If the ink does contain a photoinitiator that can react, the question becomes one of having enough initiator in the formula to fully cure the ink,” he adds.

Influences on a Wide Scale
UV ink is influenced by a number of factors. Customer demand and new applications propel advancements in this field. Additionally, enhancements to hardware require improved ink compositions.

“The increasing demand for more innovative solutions, including hardware, printheads, and accessories, influences the development of digital UV inks. Competition within this market constantly drives product development,” shares Roberts.

Rockow says Collins’ customers—the users of the inks, are driving the achievements. “When they use an ink that won’t adhere to a new substrate, cracks instead of bending, or doesn’t cure well with their printer, we develop one.”

“It is the market opportunities for using UV-curable ink that influence innovation and creativity in formulating new technology,” agrees Reid.

Eyal Duzy, marketing segment manager, HP Scitex worldwide, Hewlett-Packard (HP), points to new applications like corrugated displays and boxes. “Stacking high stacks of printed media, folding with no cracking, creasing with no scratching or smearing, and cutting with no chipping calls for great durability and high flexibility from the ink set.”

Matching the ink to the hardware is still top priority. “The requirements of the printhead remain one of the primary considerations in developing inks. If the physical properties aren’t matched—nothing works. The fine detail comes later but viscosity is still the first thing. The internal flow paths in the printhead affect formulation choice as the pulse input is transmitted through the architecture and the ink fluid,” explains Saunders.

The printheads’ ability to jet smaller dots also plays a role. “As the technology advances and the sizes of the droplets fall to two to five picoliter, the ink must be developed to work in these newer printheads. Every year the speed at which these printers print increases and as such you must have an ink that can keep up with the demand of these new high-speed printhead technologies,” says McGettrick.

Reid agrees, citing specifics such as smaller drop size, higher frequency, addressable resolution, and single pass compared to multi-pass applications. “The chemistry must keep up with hardware speeds, so jetting reliability is much more important in these new single-pass LED cure systems,” he continues.

In addition to the printheads, other design elements of a printer—such as build quality, how vibration is minimized, static reduction, and step accuracy—are critical to image quality and long-term performance, points out VanHorn.

On a larger scale, forces outside of the graphic arts effect UV ink’s development. End customers demand “greener” output and while UV is designed in many respects to combat this, there is still room for improvement. “There are global regulations that effect UV ink enhancements, making them safer for customers to handle and for those who come in contact with the final printed graphics,” says Goodearl.

The Cost of UV
With compositional and usage modifications, it is no surprise that the cost of UV ink continues to change as well. The price of UV ink is decreasing for two reasons—cost of materials and competition, which creates product volume.

McGettrick explains that the raw materials used in the development of UV ink are generally more affordable. Although, he points out that in some cases—such as metallic or special colors—those raw materials may be more expensive, which translates to higher specialized ink costs.

UV technology is becoming widespread and in recent years there have been a number of alternative options available to PSPs in the form of third-party inks. “The introduction of quality non-OEM inks influences the prices of wide format ink for every technology including UV,” cites Evron.

Additional ink types are an influence on cost. “As other technologies continue to improve, it does drive down the price of UV ink. The customer is aware of the roll-to-roll cost of latex versus UV,” shares Larson.

This price decrease will continue, foresees Salomon. “Cost per square foot has come down and probably will continue as the display graphics industry mainstreams into the general printing world, which has been more of a commodity for a while. This industry has moved from being a niche or specialty to a manufacturing business.”

Critical Segment
UV ink will play an important role in the direction of the graphic arts. Changes in the ink’s chemical composition mean a wider variety of substrates can be printed to without damaging a print. This expansion of printable materials presents PSPs with new opportunities.

Exhibit and display producers rely on superwide devices to create seamless graphics for environments like trade shows, theaters, and sports arenas.

Printing with a grand format device in this vertical market segment ensures that enough fabric is left over to be used for finishing purposes. In addition to the width, other benefits include quality and speed. Digital Output considers anything over 95 inches superwide or grand format.

As turnaround requests increase, exhibit and display graphics producers must be prepared to meet demand and today’s high-resolution devices are equipped to do so.

One Singular Sensation
Print service providers (PSPs) with clients requesting exhibits and displays often favor grand format printing over multiple wide format devices. Primarily because these printers can output a large project, like a stage backdrop, in one continuous run. The alternative is printing multiple times on several printers where color matching between prints and seaming pieces together can become challenging.

“The ability to print consistent color images on large format media allows print providers to deliver high-quality seamless displays quickly and affordably. Since large jobs are printed on very wide media in a single pass, the change of color variations between sheets is reduced,” explains Tod Robinson, channel sales manager, Paradigm Imaging Group.

A grand format printer eliminates the need for stitching panels together, saving on labor costs, says Wen Chen, director, Meijet Digital Technology Inc.

According to Hary Gandy, president, Gandy Digital, many exhibits or displays are eight feet or larger, making superwide devices a natural fit because they can print a graphic on one piece, instead of joining materials from smaller printers together in the finishing stage.

“If you use a large format printer you are going to have to deal with a seam, which can be unattractive as well as potentially labor intensive. In the exhibit and display industry, bigger is better. It grabs the audiences’ attention and makes a greater impact, so you don’t want anything taking away from the visual effect and appeal,” shares Greg Lamb, CEO, Global Imaging, Inc.

Guy Cipresso, VP sales and business development, Novus Imaging Inc., says a superwide device is favorable because it streamlines finishing operations. “Grand format printers can print eight to 15 foot wide rolls on large diameter cores resulting in grand format images having less seams.”

Not only are there finishing efficiencies with larger rolls of material, but Mark Schlimme, director of marketing Screen USA, says there are monetary advantages in running ten-foot material rolls because of the lower media cost.

Pieces and seams affect installation. “The ability to provide a larger display with fewer seams means easier installation and lower costs as less matching is required. This provides a more dramatic appearance to the customer and their audience,” points out Tom Wittenberg, sign and display marketing manager, Hewlett-Packard.

“In the end, it saves the exhibit house time and space—they don’t need to operate as many smaller machines for what they can get out of a larger machine,” explains Michelle Johnson, advertising and events manager, Mutoh America, Inc.

The benefits are “bi-fold,” according to Ed Prieto, digital printing specialist, Media One Digital Imaging Solutions LLC. “It eliminates extra time and hands for finishing, and produces a better quality, one-stop-shop product.”

Versatility is essential to many PSPs and grand format’s size offers it. “A print provider can set himself apart on larger format, high-profit jobs because of the capabilities of size that a grand format printer can produce,” shares Becky McConnell, product marketing manager, Fujifilm North America Corporation, Graphic Systems Division.

We Want More
In addition to size, exhibit and display producers have other requirements. Quality, speed, and more relevant factors are considered when it comes to superwide printing meeting their needs.

“Superwide printers are ideal for exhibit and display producers that need to control printing in house. We are at a point where most superwide devices offer high-quality output, so buyers are selecting options that are more productive, offer better value, and/or have a proven reliable support structure,” asserts Joe Garcia, managing director Americas, Stratojet USA.

When it comes to speed, superwide devices are built to go faster. “Exhibit and display products are typically large jobs where the print speed of one grand format printer can exceed three to six wide format devices,” says Cipresso.

“Speed is the key feature as it permits them to turn large jobs in a very short time. Displays and exhibits do require very good print quality and the current technology can easily meet the most extracting quality standards at very high overall print speeds,” says Terry Amerine, director of product marketing, Durst Image Technology US LLC.

Randy Paar, marketing manager – display graphics, Canon Solutions America, believes speed and quality go hand in hand. “Exhibit and display companies need equipment that provides both the speed and quality to handle not only the demands of quality conscious customers but also the inevitable rush job.”

“Exhibit and display producers’ success relies on the creation and on-time delivery of memorable brand environments and effective indoor and outdoor visual communications programs,” says Ken Hanulec, VP of marketing, EFI.

Beyond quality and speed, labor efficiency is another benefit. “It is typically more efficient to run larger, faster machines due to the lower labor rate, if you have the volume to fill these units. This is due to the fact that you have an ability to run more work with less people on the more production-oriented printers,” explains Larry D’Amico, VP digital imaging, Agfa Graphics.

Schlimme agrees, explaining that industrial built, robust superwide devices are designed to run rolls unattended, “essentially giving the owner a free additional shift of printing.”

How today’s superwide printers are configured is also part of their allure. “Newly designed industrial printheads produce smaller and variable droplet sizes enabling sharp, crisp images. These new three- to five-meter printers can more than double production capacity when compared with older grand format printers,” says Keith Faulkner, president, Splash of Color.

“Grand format printers typically use bulk ink systems to feed printheads. Using larger capacity bulk ink systems not only saves time loading cartridges, but also saves money. The typical cost per square foot for bulk ink is lower, raising the profit margin for the shop,” explains Robinson.

Resolution and Cost
Legacy grand format printers traditionally output at low resolutions. Today’s superwide devices can print at high resolutions. As such, exhibit and display producers have the option to print at a high resolution and lower rate of speed or at a low resolution and faster production speeds. The method chosen depends on the customer, job, and costs associated with it.

“Any printer is going to attempt to run at the lowest possible quality his customer will accept in order to print at the highest speed,” suggests D’Amico. “Unfortunately, competitive pressures keep pushing the quality bar up.”

Lamb provides the example of company A with grainy prints and company B with smooth toned prints, if you were a buyer—which product would you choose?

According to Faulkner, whenever soft signage, displays, or backdrops are subject to close viewing, image quality is the most important objective—even if the print speed has to be slowed down.

Johnson argues that the choice is based on customer expectations. “It’s about the quality that the customer is expecting and what the graphic will be used for. The higher resolution the image, the slower the printer will print, which will inevitably take more ink and more money.”

Wittenberg agrees. “High-end product manufacturers are particular about presentation as consumers see the quality of their signage as a reflection of the quality of the products. Pricing is part of the mix, but is not number one with the higher end. With the less discriminating customer when it comes to quality, higher speeds are in order, since the expectation is that the pricing will be low and competitive.”

In addition to expectations, consider the customer’s specific application. “Many applications are still distance viewing and there is no need for higher resolution. However, growing markets for direct to textile and soft signage also require higher resolution printing,” shares Schlimme.

Ken VanHorn, director, marketing and business development, Mimaki USA, Inc., provides the example of a header graphic that’s 20 feet off of the ground, which can be printed at a lower resolution. With a graphic viewed up close a higher resolution is required, but the text and infographic panels found on that graphic aren’t generally large, so slower speeds don’t have a significant impact.

“A higher print quality will require a slower print mode. This will affect the cost of the finished print, but that is usually more than offset by the end-selling price of the graphic itself,” says Amerine.

Overall, “the price of the job can be affected by the quality demanded, but that is not necessarily the case—this will depend on the business model and the presses that a PSP is currently using,” explains McConnell.

Always There for You
A superwide printer is beneficial for PSPs in the exhibit and display space. The overall labor savings minimizes room for error, heightens production, and eliminates the need for manpower on the production floor. While the size of the physical printer helps, today’s devices are also driven by quality and provide the option to output graphics with near or far viewing distances in mind. The result is a polished backdrop for any environment.

Floor graphics aren’t considered a wrap, per say, but when it comes down to it, the same tactics of wrapping a vehicle or a wall apply when adhering a graphic to the floor—whether it be dealing with positioning between panels or working out air bubbles. Managing client’s expectations on media durability, safety, and longevity all come into play as well. Many vehicle wrap providers offer floor graphics. The two applications benefit from shared install skills.

Wrap it All
Icon Image Graphics, based in Cerritos, CA, began in 2008. The company staffs 18 full-time graphic installers to service customers nationwide and internationally. Wrapping categories include buses, retail, specialty, tankers, trailers, trucks, vans, and cars.

“We are fortunate to apply our wrap skills to unconventional and specialty projects such as musical instruments and picture cars, aside from vehicle wraps, which is the bulk of our business,” says Sino Tour, director of operations, Icon Image Graphics.

The firm outsources their printing, preferring to remain experts on the install portion of the process. Wrapping fleets of cars, buses, trailers, and other unique objects requires full attention and devotion to the craft. The reward is winning standout jobs that set the company apart from the competition and allow it to gain notoriety.

About five percent of Icon Image Graphics’ work is considered floor graphics. It commonly finds these graphics used in areas like shopping centers, sporting events, and amusement parks. According to Tour, the company prefers to use media from 3M Commercial Solutions.

“We mainly use it for our high-end custom projects because of the durability, quality, and warranty factors,” he explains. Additionally, it chooses high-end print providers that also work with 3M media.

Standout Job
Icon Image Graphics’ wrapping expertise landed it a unique job request. Hakkasan Group and Cirque du Soleil Theatrical reached out and requested the company wrap a stage for For The Record: BAZ, based in Las Vegas, NV at the LIGHT Nightclub. The 90-minute presentation is a 360 degree, immersive theatrical experience focused on the cinematic and musical films of Baz Luhrmann.

“Although spot decals are used for stage and concert events, no floor graphics have been produced for a theatrical stage show. Normally, a stage company would use paint or other substrates to achieve the look they want,” explains Tour.

Over a period of three months, Icon Image Graphics worked with the client to get the graphics just right. Many different challenges were addressed including the show designer’s revisions, lighting concepts, material and media selection, stage construction logistics, and overlaminate tests.

The goal was to find a material that featured a non-slip overlaminate to safely accommodate any movements on the stage. Additionally, the graphic had to remain intact after each performance—durability was essential. Lastly, it had to uphold for the duration of the show, at least six months. The final choice was 3M Scotchlite Reflective Graphic Film Series 5100R with anti-slip 3M Scotchcal Overlaminate Film 3647.

An intricate design was chosen, heavily geometrically themed. Icon Image Graphics chose Consolidated Color & Design (CCD) in IL to print the graphics in 18 panels using a Hewlett-Packard Latex 260 printer. Eric Baden, owner, CCD, explains that several iterations of the media were printed, totaling 500 square feet.

“Since something like this had never been done before on a stage, to achieve the look that the customer requested, we printed a number of shades of gray and black until we got the color just right. It was difficult to meet the intended look until after the test graphics were in place because the stage lighting had such an effect on the reflective media,” shares Baden.

After the graphics were completed, an install team of four worked for ten hours to create the final look. “Matching all of the intricate grid lines from panel to panel on the printed graphics took careful planning and continuous adjustments during the install phase—we needed those lines to match up seamlessly,” shares Tour.

Some unique challenges associated with this specific job included the application surface. The team at the Hakkasan Group and Cirque du Soleil Theatrical designed the stage in 30 pieces, made up of different shapes and sizes that fit together like a giant puzzle. The reason was two-fold, one to complement the aesthetic of the show, and two it allowed the crew to breakdown the stage easily each night for storage purposes. Because of this, Icon Image Graphics had to completely edge seal all of the sides and corners of each stage piece to avoid any lifting or cracking of the media.

Not only was the design amazing and the graphics durable and safe, but the client saved money. “With a tight budget, they avoided having to install actual, physical lights into their custom-built stage. The reflective film lit certain sections of the stage via the intricate and geometric design,” explains Tour.

Install Translation
This innovative project brings new meaning to wraps and floor graphics, introducing a different environment for them to be used in. Tour hopes that its work for the Hakkasan Group and Cirque du Soleil Theatrical for For The Record: BAZ positively promotes its install capabilities from floors to cars and beyond.

“It was a challenging, yet rewarding experience to be a part of,” admits Tour. Icon Image Graphics’ ability to translate its vehicle wrapping skills to floor graphics helped them in a successful installation.

The Specialty Graphic Imaging Association (SGIA) held its annual SGIA Expo at the Georgia World Congress Center at the beginning of November in Atlanta, GA. As of November 6, 2015, the association reported 23,864 total registrants. It was whirlwind week of new printer announcements and trending applications.

Printer Announcements
A popular theme found in vendors’ booths was speed. Many hardware announcements focused on enhanced productivity features.

Agfa Graphics debuted the Anapurna M2540i FB for the first time in the U.S. It outputs at speeds up to 1,000 square feet per hour (sf/h).

Canon Solutions America exhibited the Océ ColorWave 910. A successor to the Océ ColorWave 900, it prints at up to 10,000 sf/h.

Durst US highlighted its Rho 1312 with Quadro Array printhead technology.

EFI introduced what the company refers to as “the fastest VUTEk product ever developed,” the EFI VUTEk HS125 Pro inkjet press.

Epson launched the new SureColor S60600.

Fujifilm North America Corp., Graphic Systems Division, debuted the scalable Inca Onset X Series from Inca Digital.

Hewlett-Packard (HP) showcased the HP Latex 3500, which is ideal for high-volume, dedicated application production.

Media One highlighted a 74-inch, 792 sf/h, pigment textile printer, the Arachne Hexa.

Mimaki USA, Inc. announced the TX300P-1800 direct to fabric inkjet printer.

Mutoh America, Inc. debuted the new X series of printers. All include Mutoh’s newest Smart Printing Technology, DropMaster.

OKI Data Americas, in its first appearance since acquiring Seiko’s wide format printer division, highlighted the ColorPainter H3-104s.

Roland DGA Corp. introduced the Texart XT-640, a 64-inch dye-sublimation printer. This newest device satisfies demand for high-volume fashion and sports apparel production.

Screen USA promoted new functions on its Truepress Jet W3200UV, like a high-speed print mode using five-pass, bi-directional printing to reduce turnaround time.

swissQprint announced its official U.S. subsidiary at the show. It exhibited the Nyala 2, an economical 3.2×2-meter machine.

Trending Applications
Notable applications included window media, wallcoverings, car wraps, and digital textiles.

Many companies highlighted their newest products for windows, from Drytac Corporation’s ViziPrint Illuminate PET film for day or night graphics, to Mactac Distributor Products responding to market demand by launching IMAGin WindowVIEW Cling. Lintec of America, Inc. showcased its Digital Window Graphics line. Newlife Magnetics promoted its Cling-King with micro-suction.

For wallcoverings, DreamScape announced four products—three of which were additions to existing lines and one new line, Satara. LexJet Corporation promoted its relationship with York Wallcoverings, exhibiting WallPro by York. For car wraps, ORAFOL Americas demonstrated Oracal 970RA Premium Shift Effect Cast with RapidAir Technology.

Digital textiles were prevelant throughout the exhibitor hall, whether popping up in specific booths or maintaining a large presence in the Digital Textile Printing Zone.

Vendors such as Aurora Specialty Textiles Group exhibited its textile range; DHJ Corporation promoted its capability to manufacture textiles up to five meters in width; Expand Systems partnered with U.K.-based Premier Textiles to bring its fabric to the U.S; FDC Graphic Films, Inc. encouraged attendees to check out Heytex textiles in its booth; Fisher Textiles showcased DD 6788 MoJo, a wrinkle-resistant backlit fabric; Pacific Coast Fabrics promoted Jennifer S/914, a four-way stretch performance apparel fabric; Perception Wide Format Media exhibited Repreve 100 percent recycled polyester Canvas 2.0; Top Value Fabrics debuted eight new textiles, including Flag Elite; Ultraflex Systems, Inc. promoted its Vortex Soft Signage Solutions line; Value Vinyls exhibited its textiles portfolio; Verseidag seemee US launched seemee Select; and Yarrington Mills Corporation promoted its Power-Stretch athletic fabric.

In the Digital Textile Printing Zone, attendees witnessed the creation of a small bag from end to end. Printing with a DGI Fabrijet FD-1904 printer to Aberdeen Fabrics media, individual bags were cut using a laser finisher from Axiom America. The final output was stacked in a pile with multiple design options for attendees to choose from and then have someone sew in a zipper and assemble the entire bag right in front of them.

Next year’s SGIA Expo takes place in Las Vegas, NV, September 14 to 16, 2016 at the Las Vegas Convention Center.
